About Brian

Brian Clemens is a jazz pianist, arranger, and bandleader originally from Los Angeles. After earning his Master’s Degree in California and studying under Grammy Award-winning pianist/arranger Bill Cunliffe, Brian established himself in the vibrant Los Angeles music scene. He has headlined at renowned venues such as Herb Alpert's Vibrato Jazz Grill and Campus JAX. Recently, Brian has gained international acclaim, captivating audiences in countries such as The Netherlands and Spain. His latest album, "Live in London Ft. Francesca Confortini," was recorded in London in the fall of 2023 and is available on all streaming platforms. Brian Clemens draws inspiration from legendary pianists such as Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, Billy Joel, and George Shearing. His arranging styles reflect the influence of greats like Billy May and Nelson Riddle.

About the lesson

My overall teaching philosophy is centered on ensuring that my approach is tailored to each individual lesson. Furthermore, my specific teaching philosophy differs depending on the subject. When teaching jazz improvisation and classical piano, my philosophy is that the lessons are the most successful once the student has found their own unique voice and creativity and combined it with their technical skills they have learned on the side, ultimately expressing themselves, displaying their creativity, and moving others in the process. Students have found my lessons challenging yet engaging and intriguing, presenting them with a personal challenge unique to their skillset yet also enticing them in with entertaining exercises or musical examples that have kept them engaged even in the midst of a less exciting subject. For a subject like music theory, I believe this helps to inspire the student by demonstrating how understanding the language of music is crucial to becoming a musician and contributing to the art. In addition, I strongly believe that a good teacher and student relationship is built on mutual respect and builds high self-esteem for the student. Therefore, I put a large amount of effort into creating an environment where the student is as comfortable as possible to ask questions and participate.

Brian is an excellent teacher and sweet person. He taught me music theory and piano. I come from guitar studies and I was struggling in piano as a beginner.
