About Zaakiyah
I am a journalist, poet, and screenwriter. I previously offered editing and review services to members within my community with college admissions essays, academic writing, screenwriting, and fiction and non-fiction writing. I also offered my services to inner city schools as a writing tutor throughout my college career. Through these programs, I taught children aged (8-15) poetry and performance skills, as well as writing strategies to express themselves.

My teaching method is student-centered. I love to hear to what my students have to say through brainstorming. Then, their ideas move from brainstorming to an expressive and creative piece. I love to utilize mind maps in the beginning stages and push my students to express their ideas freely before applying any technical aspects to their writing. While I consider grammar important, I have often found in my work that hyper focusing on it can often inhibit a student’s ability to simply get their idea down.
