About Alex
I have been playing piano since I was 5 and teaching since I was 11. I have performed solo, in chamber groups and in front of orchestras, though in recent years I have steadily moved away from my classical training and towards my current area of practice, Jazz. This has been due to my finding the expressive and improvisational nature of jazz both more challenging and extremely rewarding, with the performances being invigorating and in some great venues (with much better food). This being said, I still greatly enjoy playing and learning classical pieces from my favourite composers, and I routinely compose for piano and ensemble for my own enjoyment.

I believe that being a good student of the piano is all about balance. You need strong technique, but if you only spend your time doing scales and none of it messing around with random chords I sincerely think you're doing it wrong. Equally, if you only ever try to play pieces all the way through at maximum pace, then you've also missed the mark. I keep things interesting, challenging and, at the end of the day, constructive. Only those serious about improvement should inquire.
