About Tom
I have helped many hundreds of students achieve their goals in music. I am proud to say that some of them are now touring the world and enjoying professional careers that far surpass my own, even though I am have a good career as a songwriter and session musician. My students have enjoyed scholarship offers from Berklee, RAM, Guildhall and Trinity college, and to date 5 of my students have attended these famous music institutions as well as Cambridge University.
Despite all of that, I believe that playing music can benefit everyone, and I believe that genuine skill and competence is it's own reward, so any student who wants to become a skilled musician regardless of their academic or professional lives will find my lessons a most worthwhile investment!
I have taught Guitar and music for 20 years, worked as a head of music in a private institution, scored for a Hollywood trailer house, worked for most of the music agencies in Soho, worked as guitarist, a bass player, percussionist and songwriter.
I believe in patience, self-awareness, temperance and consistency as fundamental to progress, both in the teacher and the student! If all these things are achieved, there is no question you will enjoy the process, and experience genuine fun and excitement.

Full package of bespoke digital materials (pdf, & audio) will be provided, plus a tailored practice routine & follow up. Personalised video content also negotiable for extra fee. I can deliver the materials and pathway to learning a whole piece (up to grade 5) in a single lesson.
Classical Guitar: I believe in developing the ear and a strong sense of timing through reading and classical technique, observing the classical tradition but readily applied to modern music if students already have a strong sense of taste. I provide very exactly defined goals and milestones. I have taught several students from total beginner to grade 8, and have had students as young as 12 finish their grades.
Guitar: The key is to be comfortable playing songs with other musicians and understanding the role of the guitarist. Much depends on the goals of the student.
Theory & Composition: You need to understand what you're listening to first. You can learn as much grammar (theory) as you want, it's all rather pointless if you don't understand and speak the language. I train a combination of transcription, counterpoint, sight-singing, keyboard skills and songwriting, depending on the goals of the student. Theory is part of all these things, and is effortlessly understood when dealt with at the proper moment.
I teach year 3 and older, but can teach younger students as a joint lesson with a keen parent. In this circumstance the parent learns for free (or the child, if you like).
Students who have had a lesson will be added to a practice club waiting list.

Details
My fees are priced taking into consideration the considerable time I spend making resources (audio, pdfs, step-by-step 'lego plans') and drawing up practice schedules for my students, both before and after the lesson. This will often exceed a single day's work. I also follow up with students up to a month after a lesson. Students have in the past learned and continue to learn entire pieces from a single lesson using these resources, including up to grade 8.
