About Colby
About Me: Your Partner in Professional Growth Hello! I’m a dedicated accounting professional and educator with over 15 years of experience across a diverse professional landscape. I hold a Master’s degree in Accountancy, but I believe that my most valuable asset isn’t just my degree—it’s my passion for helping others find their "lightbulb moment." A Holistic Approach to Learning My career has been a unique journey. From the precision of Accountancy to the storytelling of Newspaper Editing and the strategic nature of Career Development Advising, I have spent my life translating complex information into clear, actionable insights. Whether we are tackling the fundamentals of basic math or the intricacies of a balance sheet, I bring a wealth of real-world context to every session. Why Work With Me? I know that accounting and math can feel intimidating, but I don’t think they have to be. I am known for being kind, lighthearted, and genuinely enjoyable to work with. My goal is to create a stress-free environment where you feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes—because that is where the best learning happens. Relationship-First: I love getting to know my students as individuals. Understanding your background and goals helps me tailor my teaching to your specific needs. Career-Focused: With my background in career advising, I don’t just teach you how to pass a test; I show you how these skills will help you climb the ladder in your professional life. Clarity & Communication: My experience as an editor means I prioritize clear, jargon-free communication. I break down the "language of business" into something you can speak fluently. I’m here to be your advocate, your coach, and your biggest cheerleader as you master new skills and further your career. Let’s make numbers make sense!

My Teaching Method and Techniques:
I believe accounting is best learned through active application rather than passive memorization. My approach centers on the "why" behind the numbers, not just the "how."
The T-Account Visualization: I use visual mapping to help students see the flow of value through a business, ensuring they understand the dual-entry system at its core.
Real-World Context: I bridge the gap between textbook problems and actual financial statements, showing students how a journal entry impacts the bottom line of a real company.
The Socratic Method: Instead of just giving answers, I ask guided questions to help students identify their own logic gaps in balancing a sheet.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Every session is structured to maximize retention and build confidence:
Check-in & Review (10 mins): We address specific "pain points" from the student's recent lectures or homework.
Concept Deep Dive (15 mins): A focused explanation of the day's topic (e.g., Revenue Recognition or Accruals).
Guided Practice (25 mins): We work through a complex problem together, step-by-step.
Independent Sprint (10 mins): The student tackles a similar problem while I observe and provide real-time feedback.
What Sets Me Apart
While many tutors focus on passing the next exam, I focus on professional fluency.
Industry Insight: I share shortcuts and "best practices" used in modern accounting software and corporate environments.
Anxiety Reduction: I specialize in helping students overcome "math anxiety" by breaking down complex GAAP or IFRS standards into plain English.
Efficiency: I teach students how to identify the "distractor" information often found in complex exam questions.
Who These Lessons Are For
I support students at various stages of their academic and professional journeys:
High School Students: Students prepping for their accounting classes or future in college accounting.
Undergraduate Students: Introductory Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Intermediate I & II.
MBA Candidates: Non-finance professionals looking to master financial statement analysis.
