About Sue
I am a professional writer and high school literature teacher. I've published hundreds of articles, 2 books, and taught students of all ages for 30+ years. I specialize in small classrooms and tutoring situations. My greatest specialization is teaching writing, both creative and expository. I have helped unmotivated and advanced students become writers.

I use a hands-on approach to teaching students to read, analyze, and write. This includes getting to know the student's personality, interests, and roadblocks to learning.
My literature lessons look like:
1. introduce author, historical context, important vocabulary
2. begin reading together; teach annotation, analysis, and/or note-taking skills, depending on student's age
3. student finishes reading on his/her own
4. student writes answers to questions or writes about the reading as homework
Next lesson:
1. review answers, writing, vocab, etc. with student; discuss themes and characaters
2. look for literary techniques and teach student how to analyze
3. introduce new reading or writing lesson
Writing lesson:
1. introduce type of writing (creative, essay, poetry, etc.)
2. show example; read and analyze
3. practice together
4. brainstorm a topic that student will write about
5. student completes writing assignment in stages (over a period of sessions):
choose topic
brainstorm
thesis/big idea
outline/storyline
write rough draft
edit
write final draft
Advanced essay-writing involves learning to research, not plagiarize, cite, annotate, note-take, make an argument, support points, etc.
Types of essays taught (all 5-paragraph format):
descriptive
process
definition
informative
comparison/contrast
persuasive
research paper/term paper

Going in-person rate for private tutoring is between $60-$100 per hour. I offer discounts for students buying packages--for example, a semester at a time. Payment must be monthly. If a student doesn't show up for a session, the payment is not refunded. Lessons are individually-catered to a student's learning style and skills. I will use Google Classroom for online learning. You must have a Google account for virtual lessons.
