About Marie

I have been a private teacher of Mathematics and Statistics since 2010. Formerly a classe prépa student and a statistician by training (ENSAE), I have been teaching maths and statistics for over ten years to students with various backgrounds from secondary school to doctorate.
Private lessons, small groups, university courses, teaching abroad... My objective: to identify your blocks and provide you with methodology and practice to give you confidence in your ability to do maths.

My teaching experience in France and abroad has convinced me of one thing: unless you are studying literature or philosophy, everyone needs maths at some point. In the short term, to pass exams or competitions, to augment a thesis or dissertation with a piece of statistical analysis, or in the long run because it has become essential to know how to calculate, understand and analyse figures in most professions.

Actually, the vast majority of my students have a "non-scientific" profile, from the 10th grader who is considering studying political science to the ECG prépa student who needs maths to pass her competitive exams, from the psychology student who finds her statistics courses too abstract to the doctoral student in digital humanities who needs to produce a solid statistical analysis for her thesis.

They all have one thing in common: their lack of confidence. When I ask them, the answers are invariable: it's too hard, too abstract, I understand the lessons but can't apply them, I'm lost when a problem comes up, I'm not smart enough for that...

Self-confidence is the key to doing maths with pleasure. And confidence in maths can be learned! If you find that you don't think "fast enough", if you don't have an idea to start a problem, if you have trouble finding the connections between the course and the exercises... All this is not a question of ability, but of method.

Learning the course is one thing. But theory does not teach us how to develop the right reflexes to solve problems and succeed in competitive examinations. In my private lessons, we concentrate our efforts on two main points:

- Practice: even solving simple exercises is difficult if you lack practice. My classes focus on problem solving: how to solve problems but also (and above all!) how to acquire practical reflexes that you will be able to apply in your tests, exams and competitions.

- Methodology: knowing how to read a statement well, having ideas to start exercises, not panicking when you get stuck on a question... These are things that we are rarely taught in class. And on this point, each student is unique! Finding the method that suits you will make you realise that you have the skills in maths: you just have to unlock them.

Experience abroad: During and after my studies, I lived in Ireland and England for several years. In addition to tutoring, I was part of research laboratories at the universities of Dublin and Bristol, where I taught courses over several semesters (Probability Theory, Statistics, Applied Maths for Economics and Business, Research Methods, Calculus, Statistical Modelling, etc).

From this teaching experience, apart from the personal benefits, I have learned that it is with private or small group lessons that I can best help my students: flexibility, patience, personal approach... All these things are difficult to put in place when facing a group of 30 or even 50 students.

When I say that I am a maths teacher, I get two reactions: "So great!" or "Ooh, I don't have good memories of maths...".
If we dig a little deeper into the second answer, we realise that these people often have a bad experience of maths dating from secondary school. These experiences lead to resentment towards the subject and the conviction (which often persists long afterwards) that one can never feel comfortable with it. But this is far from being a foregone conclusion.

My experience as a private teacher has shown me that the problem of many students is their lack of confidence. They all think they are rubbish and that maths is not for them.

Therefore, my courses focus on two points:

- Practice: solving exercises, problems from the Bac... After spending hours in class on theory, it is time to apply your knowledge.

- Methodology: reading a statement well, mobilising your knowledge, remaining calm in case of blockage...

Gaining practice and demonstrating method will allow you to (re)find your confidence in yourself and in your abilities when doing maths. When you get bad or average grades, it is very easy to be overwhelmed by doubt, to tell yourself that you are not talented enough... This is why confidence in your abilities is essential: and confidence can be learned!

The objective of the course is to identify your blocks in order to overcome them and approach homework more serenely, to acquire automatisms through practice and the right reflexes to apply in order to succeed in the Bac test and to open up your prospects for the post-Bac.

Methods: Online courses (Zoom) which guarantee flexibility and accessibility. Individual or group lessons of maximum three students.

The ideal length of a session in high school is 1 hour, at least once a week to ensure a certain regularity. Longer sessions (1h30) can be envisaged during the holidays to consolidate knowledge more calmly.

I also offer intensive revision courses in small groups during the February holidays, just before the speciality tests, and support for the Grand Oral in June. Dates for 2023 to be defined.

Do not hesitate to write to me for any question! See you soon.
