About Annalisa
I recently graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and I spent the last three years of my degree working as a Physics tutor.
I think one of the most valuable things you can get from studying Maths and Physics is a deeper understanding and intuition for how things work. Strengthening your conceptual understanding makes it much easier to approach unfamiliar problems, break them down and work out how to solve them, rather than having to rely on memorising a particular method for every type of question. I think this is a really useful skill, both for future courses and more generally, and it's something I really enjoy helping students develop.
During my three years tutoring at Princeton, I worked with students in quite a few different ways. I often tutored the same students every week, where we could follow their syllabus and build on what we had done in previous sessions. I also did a lot of one-to-one drop-in tutoring. In those sessions, I might meet someone for the first time without knowing what they already understood, what they were struggling with or what they wanted to get out of the session. Because these sessions could also be quite short, I got a lot of practice quickly working out what a student needed and adapting the session to make it as useful as possible for them.
As tutors, we also took part in regular training sessions where we practised different tutoring techniques and looked at some of the less obvious things that can affect how someone learns, such as the questions you ask, your tone of voice and body language. We regularly observed one another and gave peer feedback too. This meant that tutoring wasn't just something I did alongside my degree; I was also expected to think carefully about how I was teaching and to keep improving.
I really enjoyed tutoring at Princeton, particularly getting to know students over time and finding different ways of explaining something until it clicked. I'd like my students to come away not only better prepared for their exams, but also more confident in their own ability to understand and solve problems.

I believe one of the biggest benefits of one-to-one tutoring is being able to tailor lessons to the individual student. Everyone learns differently and comes to tutoring with different goals, so I like to adapt both the content and structure of my sessions to what each student finds most helpful.
For students looking for ongoing tutoring, I offer a free initial consultation where we can discuss what you would like to get out of the sessions. Parents are very welcome to join this conversation too. This might include building a stronger conceptual understanding of Maths or Physics, working through homework or difficult problems, practising exam questions and developing exam technique, revising particular topics, or a mixture of these. We can also discuss whether you would prefer more structured lessons or a more informal format where you bring questions and topics you would like to work through together.
I also offer one-off sessions for students who would simply like some extra help with a particular topic, concept or set of problems. If you let me know beforehand what you are struggling with, or send me the questions you would like to discuss, I can prepare so that we can make the most of our time together. There is no need for an initial consultation for these sessions.
Lessons are typically one hour long. For ongoing tutoring, the frequency and focus of sessions can be decided during the initial consultation and adjusted over time as your needs change.
I offer GCSE Maths and Physics tutoring both in person around West Molesey and the surrounding area and online.
