About Maxwell

I am a sinologist (researcher of China) in training doing my MA at Fudan University. I've tutored Chinese and English (five students) for five years offline. My students have succeeded both domestically and abroad with new inspired confidence to take on their degree programs.

Growing up I was always told that knowing Chinese can open doors for you. During my journey with the Chinese language I:

- Lead an academic seminar in Chinese
- Published an article based almost entirely on Chinese source material
- Helped Chinese companies land in the Bay Area
- Facilitated the sale of a business
- Gained acceptance to the 3rd ranked University in China on full scholarship
- Met friends abroad who have broadened my horizons.

About the lesson

Approaching the Chinese language can be daunting and I usually take it upon myself to make the language as accessible as possible. The structure of tutoring sessions makes it possible for me to hone in and tailor my session to meet my student's needs.

Session structure depends on my student's aims as well; preparing for a standardized test like the SAT II or AP test is much different from learning to just carry a conversation. Regardless, I believe that in language learning comprehension boosts competence. The more a student can understand the better they will preform. I prefer to have a consultation meeting with prospective students beforehand to see how I can best help them to reach their goals.

A typical lesson might look like this:

- For intermediate and advanced students, I expect them to come to my sessions having previewed class material. This might something they've been assigned in class or an article that I pick out for them that matches their personal interests.
- We spend 10-15 minutes reading the material, correcting for pronunciation and misread characters. The remainder is spent on conversing and applying new vocabulary and grammar.
- Because I want my students to have a grasp on speaking and constructing sentences, I tend to write down my corrections and send them to my students after the session, only giving corrections for major errors. I find that this helps build confidence in speaking Chinese.
