About Anusha

Hi, I'm Anusha Cassum. I'm a postgraduate student myself at Queen Mary University of London, and the fact that I myself am a student currently, is exactly why I know what helps a student learn better and grasp concepts more easily. In my approach to teaching mathematics, logic, geometry, and trigonometry to Grade 5 to Grade 9 students, I will employ a holistic teaching technique that will combine various methodologies to cater to individual learning styles. With my background in Computer Science, including an ongoing MSc, Bachelors, A-Levels, and O-Levels, I will bring a strong foundation in logical thinking and problem-solving. During our 2-hour lessons, I will emphasize the importance of building a solid understanding of fundamental concepts before delving into more complex topics. For mathematics and trigonometry, I will use a hands-on approach, employing real-world examples and interactive exercises to make abstract concepts more relatable. In logic, I will encourage critical thinking through puzzles and thought experiments. Geometry will be taught with a focus on visual aids and practical applications. Overall, my goal will be to create a stimulating learning environment that fosters curiosity and helps students grasp these subjects with confidence and enthusiasm.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

From a very early age, I developed a keen interest in Mathematics. As a child aspiring to become a teacher, I found myself drawn to tutoring at an early stage in my life. Even during my own school years, I frequently assisted my younger brother with various subjects, not limited to mathematics alone. However, my passion for Mathematics has always been a step ahead. This enthusiasm led me to take on the role of a teacher's assistant during my A-levels and again while pursuing my bachelor's degree in university.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My favorite subjects within mathematics are undoubtedly geometry and statistics. I find great joy in exploring the intricacies of these topics with students. During my bachelor's degree, I served as a teaching assistant for Calculus, which, surprisingly, happens to be my least favorite among mathematical subjects. Despite this, I believe it's crucial to approach every topic with enthusiasm and dedication, ensuring that students receive comprehensive and engaging learning experiences.
  • Certainly, I've been fortunate to have remarkable teachers throughout my school years. One teacher who particularly stands out is Mr. Nasir Ghani, my A-levels Mathematics instructor. His teaching approach was truly inspiring as he engaged students interactively, using real-life examples to make complex mathematical concepts more tangible and accessible.

Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe that effective communication skills are essential for a good tutor. A tutor should possess the ability to discern a student's strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Clarity of understanding in the subject matter is crucial, enabling the tutor to address any questions the student may have during the teaching process. A successful tutor should be able to identify the specific needs of the student and provide additional attention where necessary.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my A-levels, I served as a teaching assistant for my peers. One memorable experience involved a student who approached me after failing his A-level exam the previous year. Seeking guidance for a retake, he expressed a strong desire for my tutoring assistance. As we worked together, I noticed his dedicated efforts-attempting past exam papers and diligently solving questions. However, it became evident that he struggled with clearing his mathematical concepts, hindering his efficiency in answering questions.

I tactfully addressed this issue and we embarked on a journey to review and reinforce various mathematical concepts that posed challenges for him. To support his learning, I shared the comprehensive notes I had crafted during class, which had proven beneficial for me as well. Through hours of collaborative practice and focused tutoring, he approached his exam with newfound confidence and achieved a commendable score. The joy in his voice when he called me to share his success remains a vivid and rewarding memory from my days as a teaching assistant.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

During my student years, I grappled with the complexities of proofs in Mathematics. However, with persistent practice and dedication, I developed a growing affinity for them as my understanding deepened over time.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I find passion in logical and analytical thinking, a trait that extends to my enthusiasm for teaching. Guiding someone to cultivate logical and analytical skills holds a special place in my heart. Teaching has become a passion for me, complementing my 5-year professional journey as a Software Developer. However if someone were to ask me about my passion in something completely different, my answer would be dancing!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

The secret ingredient? Simply being awesome!
