About Joel
I came to the study of English Literature through a sustained personal engagement with questions of identity, power, and exclusion. Growing up with an acute awareness of social hierarchies and silences, I became interested in how lived experiences of marginalization shape inner life and self-perception. Literature, for me, became a space to examine these tensions with depth and honesty. This personal orientation naturally drew me toward African American literature, where psychological conflict and social injustice are inseparable.
My academic work centers on the fiction of Richard Wright, through which I explore how systemic racism penetrates consciousness and produces fear, alienation, and moral fragmentation. Methodologically, I rely on close textual reading informed by psychoanalytic theory, Marxist criticism, and critical race studies. My research reflects an effort to bring personal insight into dialogue with rigorous theory, aiming to produce scholarship that is both critically disciplined and ethically engaged.
