About Andrea

I have been teaching privately and in the public schools since 2001. My students enjoy a friendly but structured lesson sequence and families frequently comment on their progress! I keep things student-centered and positive while addressing technical concerns and challenges in a focused way.

About the lesson

My lessons are student-centered. Through creating goals and tailoring lessons toward those goals, we develop the musical understanding and technical skills on the instrument or with the voice.

Voice lessons:
1. Warm up breath, posture, energy.
2. Tone and matching pitch, sight-reading
3. Developing tone throughout the range
4. Diction, diction, diction!
5. Repertoire is selected by both teacher and student to embody the student’s creative drive, joy, and intention.
6. Expressive qualities in the music

String lessons
1. Posture and hand position
2. Bow hold, placement, pressure
3. Rhythm and pitch reading
4. Placing fingers on the fingerboard
5. Skill progressions through lesson books and student-selected repertoire
6. Expressive qualities in the music

Wind lessons
1. Posture, breath, and embouchure
2. Tone production with breath support
3. Rhythm and pitch reading
4. Finger placement to create pitches
5. Skill progressions through lesson books and student-selected repertoire
6. Expressive qualities in the music

Piano lessons
1. Posture, hand shape, weight, warmups
2. Identifying pitches on the keyboard
3. Rhythm and pitch reading
4. One hand vs. 2 hands, melody, harmony, direction and reading pop charts
5. Skill progressions through lesson books and student-selected repertoire
6. Expressive qualities in the music
