About David

I’m a dedicated piano educator and professional musician, with 23 years of experience as a pianist and a teaching career spanning 11 years across private, school, community, and international settings.

I graduated from the University of Oxford with First-Class Honours in Music and have taught piano privately full-time for over six years, building a thriving practice of 35–40 students per week. I teach across classical, jazz, blues, and pop, working with students ranging from complete beginners to advanced pupils preparing for ABRSM exams, GCSE Music, and beyond. My students have a 100% exam pass rate, with consistently strong results and predominantly Merits and Distinctions.

I believe that when students feel inspired and emotionally connected to what they’re playing, progress comes more naturally. Every student is treated as an individual, and I adapt my teaching to their interests, goals, and learning style. Lessons can be structured and holistic or more open-ended and spontaneous, depending on what works best for the student.

I actively avoid rote learning, instead helping students understand what they are playing and why. Lessons may involve improvisation, duetting, listening, exploring patterns at the piano, and developing technique and reading skills alongside repertoire. With younger students, this might include playful, game-based learning and clear structure; with adults, it may involve learning favourite pieces while building strong technical foundations.

Alongside private teaching, I have significant experience working within schools, giving me a strong understanding of safeguarding, behavioural management, and calm, well-structured lessons for children. I have taught pupils aged 4 through to adults and have extensive experience supporting students with additional needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, hearing impairment, and English as an additional language.

I am also an active professional musician. I have performed and toured extensively in the UK and Europe with Mandrake Handshake, most recently touring with Del Amitri, and have released music under my solo project Silver Sakura. I self-produced my debut album Childhood Sketches, featuring solo piano and experimental jazz, with coverage from BBC Introducing and international radio. I have also composed and produced music for films and documentaries.

These experiences allow me to bring real-world musicianship into lessons, helping students connect their learning to performance, creativity, improvisation, and a wider musical world.

My lessons are tailored to each student rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. I want students to make genuine progress while developing a lasting relationship with music and the piano.

Depending on the student, a lesson might include repertoire, technique, sight-reading, theory, improvisation, ear training, duetting, or simply exploring something interesting at the piano. For exam students, I provide clear structure, weekly goals, and focused preparation while making sure that learning remains musical rather than becoming purely exam-driven.

For younger students, I use games, creative activities, and clear routines to keep lessons engaging and purposeful. For adults, I’m equally happy to work towards a particular goal, learn favourite repertoire, develop technique from the ground up, or simply enjoy playing.

I also place a strong emphasis on helping students become independent musicians. Rather than simply telling students what to practise, I explain how and why to practise, helping them develop effective practice habits, musical understanding, and confidence.

Whether you are starting from scratch, preparing for an exam, returning to the piano after many years, or looking to take your playing further, lessons are designed to be challenging, enjoyable, and genuinely rewarding.
