About Eligh
Hello! I’m a classical pianist about to finish my second year pursuing a Piano Performance undergraduate degree at McGill University. I’ve been studying piano for 16 years, and classical violin for 14 years, stopping violin lessons when I arrived at McGill. Before coming to McGill, I participated in and won local competitions in my home state of Washington for piano, violin, and composition. At McGill, I’ve studied piano with Stéphane Lemelin and guest professor Katherine Chi, and taken classes on music theory and music history. I’ve participated in many large and small ensembles, such as playing both violin and piano in Beethoven Orchestra, gaining experience sight-reading complicated orchestral pieces arranged for two pianos, and singing in Schulich Singers, the premier vocal large ensemble at McGill. Music has always been a big part of my life, and I’ve put a lot of thought and consideration into what it means to be a musician, to love music, and to both get the most out of and give the most to the music I play. Sharing what I’ve learned through being so immersed in music all my life brings me great joy, and I’m so excited to help students navigate their way through their musicianship!

My lessons are based fundamentally on where the student is at - helping them find, set, and achieve long and short-term goals, and meeting them where they’re at in a way that helps them learn in the way that is easiest for them.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
In initial sessions, I’ll get a sense for what you know, and begin introducing new concepts of piano technique, comfort, and familiarity.
Lessons start with warm-ups, introduction of daily practices to build ‘muscles’, both physical and mental, that you need to play the best you can.
Scales and arpeggios, technique books such as those by Hanon, Cortot, and Philipp give structure to the building of muscles.
Working with Repertoire: we will assess together where you’re at, keeping in mind where you’ve been and planning for where you could go next.
MY TEACHING STYLE - THE HOURGLASS
Beginning with large scale work, moving in to smaller and smaller details, and then eventually scaling back out to allow those details to give context to the big picture.
Used on both small-scale, individual lessons, and on the large-scale learning of a piece or skill.
Present-tense, practically applicable, student-specific guidance that fits within a multi-lesson framework for specific musical and pianistic techniques you’re working to understand and apply.
