About Julia
I have been playing piano casually for over 20 years. I grew up playing classical and was taught how to play from a very open-minded teacher. I approach each child’s needs differently. I firmly believe that each individual learns differently and there is no one size fits all when it comes to learning, including music.
My favorite things to play are pieces from video games and movies. Some of the pieces I’ve either learned recently or am currently learning are: Witcher 3 Soundtrack, Skyrim Medley by Kyle Landry, Fallout 4 by Inon Zur, The Greatest Showman and Queen Piano Medley’s by Costantino Carrara. I am also working on a challenge piece: Jarrod Radnich’s Game of Thrones Medley. Radnich also happens to be my favorite active pianist today. Kyle Landry and Costantino Carrara are two others I admire greatly for their creativity and skill. There are so many more incredible pianists out there, it’s hard to even say for sure if these are my favorites, but they are the ones I find myself listening to on a weekly basis.
One last note, I have never been great at improv. I would not recommend myself if that is what you are seeking. Ironically, my brother also plays piano but he only does improv, he won’t play a piece written by anyone else. Everyone is different, and I want to make sure you and I (or your child) are a good match so that I can lead them to success.

I have only taught friends before, but I’ve approached it differently every time. I’m familiar with various teaching methods. Some don’t have you touching the piano hardly at all for the beginning weeks. Some methods have you starting on piano day 1 and learning the theory as you go. The way I taught is a lot more like the second method I mentioned and is how I approach students at first. I can usually tell within the first lesson if that method will work or not. I am teaching my fiancé to play, an engineer, and I have learned to adapt my approach to a more methodical and logical one.
I have also had to teach myself in many ways. I haven’t had piano lessons in years but had been able to self teach myself well for years. Then I hit a plateau. I was not as precise as I needed to be and I had been anti-metronome my whole life. I regret so much being a stubborn child because I am now learning as an adult how to play with a metronome and it was very challenging at first. Now that I’ve gotten used to it, my skill level has increased. I also started using a program called Piano For All that is helping me reach higher heights.
