About Mia

My B.S. in Integrated Science at Belmont University included a full year of algebra-based and introductory calculus-based physics, covering mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics. I have been tutoring physics for 5 years to students ranging from 6th graders in introductory physical science to high school seniors in AP Physics 1 and 2. I am especially effective with students who come in frustrated, confused, or convinced they are "bad at science" — because my calm, concept-first approach consistently helps these students rebuild their understanding and their confidence at the same time. One of my proudest tutoring moments in physics came in 2023 when a student who had failed her AP Physics 1 midterm came to me in a complete panic. We met twice a week for the remaining 10 weeks of the semester — and she finished with a 72% final exam grade and a passing score of 3 on the AP exam. She cried on our last session. I cried a little too, honestly. I also tutored a 7th-grade student through his first physical science unit in 2022 — he came in thinking science was boring and left convinced he wanted to be an astrophysicist someday. That kind of moment is exactly why I do this. I bring genuine enthusiasm to every physics session, especially the big-picture topics like astrophysics and quantum physics — where the material is so fascinating that students often forget they are studying and just start wanting to know more. Physics is amazing. I am here to help you see that too.

Can I be completely honest? Physics has a really unfair reputation. So many students come to me saying "I hate physics" or "physics is impossible" — and almost every single time, what they actually mean is "I was never shown physics in a way that made sense to me." And that, I can absolutely fix. Here is what I believe about physics: it is the most awe-inspiring subject in the entire school curriculum. We are literally talking about how the universe works — from the tiny behavior of particles you cannot see to the life and death of stars billions of light-years away. If that is not worth being excited about, I do not know what is. And my job is to help you feel that excitement while also actually understanding the material well enough to ace your class. In my physics lessons, I always start with the concept before the formula. What is actually happening here? What does this equation mean in plain English? Why does this law exist? Once you have a clear mental picture of what is going on, the math becomes a tool that makes sense — not a collection of symbols to memorize and hope you apply correctly. For foundational physics, we cover kinematics (motion, speed, velocity, acceleration — all with clear diagrams), Newton's three laws and how to apply them to any situation, forces and free body diagrams, work and energy, momentum and collisions, circular motion, simple harmonic motion, waves and sound, light and optics, and electricity and magnetism. I align all lessons with your class curriculum and use AP Physics 1, 2, and C problem sets for advanced students. Thermodynamics is one of my personal favorite topics to teach — I love connecting it to things students already know: why does a hot drink cool down? Why does sweating cool you off? How does a refrigerator actually work? We cover heat transfer, the laws of thermodynamics, entropy (I have a great everyday explanation for that one!), ideal gases, and heat engines in a way that feels intuitive and logical. For astrophysics, get ready for some genuine wonder — we talk about how stars are born and die, what black holes actually are and why they are so extreme, how we know the universe is expanding, what dark matter and dark energy are, and what the Big Bang actually means. These sessions always generate the best conversations. Nuclear physics covers radioactive decay, half-life, fission and fusion (and the incredible amount of energy involved), and how nuclear reactors work — explained clearly and carefully. And for quantum physics, I love walking students through the weirdest ideas in all of science: why particles behave like waves, what Heisenberg's uncertainty principle actually says, how atomic orbitals are shaped, and what quantum entanglement means — all in plain, accessible English that still respects the real science. Every session includes worked examples, practice problems, and lots of "does that make sense?" check-ins — because your understanding is the only thing that matters.
