About Jolene
Being able to help students get more marks in exams, knowing the syllabus inside-out from teaching it year after year and understanding how to explain the tricky bits of the hard topics is all well and good as part of my job, but at heart I'm really just an enthusiast who wants to share my passion for science and maths and get students to find the spark of curiosity that led me from studying past papers as hard as I could to researching frontier issues facing the nuclear waste industry in our country. It's important to me that students feel seen in their struggles with exam stresses, grades and homework frustrations, but that we find a way to let science and maths be the confidence-building and world-appreciating subjects they can and should be as part of a standard education. These subjects shouldn't be inaccessible or bare minimum passes as part of multi-year uphill battle, they should be fun and connect students with the world around them as the people who will be the future researchers and stewards of our planet.

I have been a private tutor since 2013, and teaching online exclusively since 2020. I specialise in helping neurodiverse students achieve their goals, including students with mental health difficulties, with a compassionate and mental health-informed approach to studies and exams. I custom write resources that I update every year depending on each student's needs. Lessons typically last 1 hour following a structure of rapport building; refresh and recap; introduction and linking a new topic to what is already known and then worked examples and practice, finishing with applied examples at the end of a session. This keeps it fast paced enough to be interesting and engaging, but gives us the flexibility to be as slow as a student needs on a particular topic. My passion for science and maths allows me to bring relevant and exciting examples from real life that help breathe energy into the work we do and help combat motivation problems. I can teach any age including degree-level students, but have the most experience with GCSE and A-level students.

Jolene has been tutoring both my kids through GCSE and A-Levels and has been a blessing to our family. She is also so good at emotional support and revision plans that we have always told her to use the weekly session however she sees fit. More importantly perhaps we have recommended her to lots of families and most of them still use her ongoing support. She has developed such good tutoring skills (I work in education sector) that I have paid her to support friends who want to get into tutoring. She often fills up her weekly slots so recommend getting a wiggle on it and connect with her.
Jolene has helped me find dormant logic skills I didn't know I had, built my confidence in handling numbers and mathematical concepts I found daunting or confusing, and has inspired me with her enthusiasm to find maths fun- something I never thought I would be able to say.
Jolene encourages me to ask questions about things that aren't in the syllabus, and rolls with my natural curiosity to broaden my understanding beyond what is required for school, and then ties it back to the concepts in the textbook in ways I never imagined.
I often forget to let Jolene know ahead of time what topics I need help with, and her ability to pick up and go at the beginning of our lesson with no preparation time is a testament to how well she knows the content. Sometimes I aks for help with Physics, Chemistry, or Biology as well as Maths and she can adapt to any of my questions on the fly. She has also helped me with my anxiety, teaching me exam technique, how to discern my learning needs, and how to ground myself when I am struggling with a question under pressure.
I cannot recommend Jolene highly enough. I have Autism and ADHD and struggle to connect with a lot of people, but Jolene knows how to communicate with me in ways I will understand and find interesting so that I don't lose focus. She is kind and professional, and is communicative about her expectations of me as her student. She is generous with her time, making homeworks specifically for me and being available by email if I get stuck. She never punishes me if I forget to hand homework in, but is clear that she will only make me homework if I complete it, which means if I am overburned with other work I can tell her I can't do homework for a while, without that being an issue.
Basically, Jolene is everything I could want in a tutor, and as a scientist herself has some really cool stories about her research.View more recommendations
