About Joe
I am a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in Physics at the University of Lancashire with over 20 years of experience teaching physics and mathematics. Throughout my career I have taught students from school level through to postgraduate researchers, helping them develop both strong subject knowledge and effective problem-solving skills.
This summer, I developed and wrote a 70-page Maths Wizard book to help my 9-year-old daughter overcome emerging maths anxiety and build confidence in the subject. I created a structured programme with games, challenges, encouragement and progressively more demanding problems designed to build both confidence and understanding. Over the course of the summer between Years 4 and 5, she progressed beyond Year 6 material and developed a much more positive attitude towards mathematics. The project reflected a principle I have always valued as an educator: keep it fun! [This was crystallized in me early: as a PhD student, a collaborating prof from Pennsylvania consoled me by saying 'if it was easy, it wouldn't be fun..']
Alongside teaching, I lead research in experimental physics, atomic-scale microscopy and manipulation, and computational wave and quantum physics. I have authored more than 50 publications in leading international journals, and I regularly supervise PhD students and research projects at the forefront of modern science. This means I use physics and mathematics every day, not just to teach, but to solve real research problems.
I enjoy helping students reach their potential. Some students come to me because they are struggling with a particular topic, while others are aiming for the highest grades or preparing for competitive university courses. In both cases, my goal is the same: to build genuine understanding, confidence and independent thinking.
Students and parents (including my own!) often appreciate that I can explain difficult concepts clearly and patiently, while also providing the depth and challenge needed by high-achieving students. Whether you are aiming to improve your grades, secure an A*, or prepare for a future in science, engineering, mathematics or computing, I can provide expert guidance tailored to your goals.

My approach to tutoring
Physics and mathematics make much more sense when you understand the ideas behind the formulae. My teaching focuses on developing understanding and problem-solving ability rather than memorisation or learning procedures by rote.
I begin by identifying a student's current strengths, areas for development, and academic goals. Lessons are then tailored to the individual, whether that means strengthening fundamental concepts, tackling challenging examination questions, or exploring topics beyond the syllabus. I encourage students to explain their reasoning, develop effective problem-solving strategies, and build the confidence to approach unfamiliar questions independently. While understanding is paramount, the goal is always kept in sight; passing assessments is a skill in its own right.
Some benefit from carefully worked examples and structured practice, while others thrive when challenged to think more deeply about a topic. My aim is always to provide the right balance of support and challenge.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged for intensive revision or examination preparation.
Lessons are suitable for:
• GCSE Physics and Maths
• A Level Physics and Maths
• University Physics
• Students aiming to improve grades and confidence
• High-achieving students targeting grades 8/9 and A/A*
• Students preparing for university study in physics, engineering, mathematics, computer science and other STEM subjects
Whether you are trying to overcome a particular difficulty, improve your grades, or prepare for the next stage of your education, my aim is to help you develop genuine understanding, confidence and independence.
