About James
I am a recent physics graduate from Brigham Young University with physics education licensure and a minor in math. I have over two years of experience as a teaching assistant where I worked with students one-on-one both in major and non-major physics courses. In addition, I continue to work with students as a substitute teacher, and recently completed student teaching.
Learning physics was initially a struggle for me, even though I loved the subject. However, I understood that it had nothing to do with whether I was "good" or "bad" at physics: with continued efforts to find consistent strategies that helped me to learn, I consistently scored well in college courses and was offered opportunities to help others with the subject as a teaching assistant. I believe that each person has unique strengths that can help them understand math and physics in a way that makes sense to them, and that having difficulties with a subject does not mean that you cannot learn it!
During my time as a student, I have dedicated efforts not only to learning and helping others to learn physics, but understanding how people learn. I have assisted with research on physics problem-solving and continue to use these tools that have been shown to help students in learning concepts and how to solve problems. I would love to share any tools that may be helpful to you as you learn math and physics!

Math and physics are subjects learned with experience! In lessons, we will look for what practice you need to better understand concepts and how to apply them. I also have experience with physics problem-solving research, and we will work to find a problem-solving approach that consistently helps you to solve new or challenging problems on your own.
Whether you are a high school student taking these classes as a requirement, or a physics major in your first few classes trying to find what works, I would love to work with you! I understand that whatever your background, experience, or interest with math or physics, they can be challenging to understand. In our lessons, we will work through these challenges with patience and confidence that learning is always possible!
