About Jerry
I’ve been around cameras most of my life.
When I was young, my father would occasionally let me borrow his camera. I remember the first time I realized that the photograph I saw in my mind could actually be created with the camera in my hands. That moment stuck with me. From then on, photography wasn’t just about taking pictures — it was about learning how light, timing, and composition come together to tell a story.
Over the years that curiosity grew into a career in the creative world. I’ve spent more than 20 years working as a photographer, creative director, and designer, helping bring ideas to life through images. Along the way I also discovered something I enjoy just as much as making photographs: helping other people learn how to do it too.
One of my favorite moments as a teacher is watching when things suddenly “click” for a student. At first the camera feels complicated — buttons, dials, menus, strange settings. But once someone understands the relationship between light, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, the camera stops feeling intimidating and starts feeling like a creative tool.
That transformation is incredibly rewarding to watch.
Most of my students are people who recently bought a camera and know it’s capable of much more than Auto mode. They want to understand what the camera is actually doing and how to take control of it.
I’ve worked with DSLR and mirrorless cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm, and I enjoy helping people learn how to use the equipment they already own.
I’m based in San Diego and continue to work professionally in photography and creative direction. When teaching in person, I like to meet in locations that provide great opportunities to practice — places with interesting architecture, beautiful natural light, and real scenes to photograph.
Photography becomes much more exciting when you start to understand how it works. My goal is to help you reach that point where the camera stops feeling complicated and starts feeling like an extension of your creative eye.

Bought a camera but still shooting in Auto?
You’re not alone. Modern cameras are incredibly powerful, but the manuals rarely teach you how to actually use them to create photographs you’re proud of.
That’s where I come in.
I’m a photographer, creative director, and mentor with more than 20 years of experience helping people develop creative skills. I love helping people discover that moment when everything finally “clicks” and they realize they actually understand how their camera works.
My approach is practical and encouraging. Instead of long lectures or technical jargon, we work directly with your camera so you understand why things work, not just which buttons to press.
Most of my students are beginners who recently bought a camera and want to move beyond Auto mode. Within the first lesson, my goal is to help you start seeing how light, settings, and composition work together so your photos immediately begin to improve.
In our lessons we focus on the fundamentals that actually matter:
• Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO — explained clearly
• How to shoot confidently in manual or semi-manual modes
• Composition and how to train your eye to see a photograph
• Using natural light to your advantage
• Getting the most from your lenses
• Practical shooting techniques you can apply right away
My teaching style is collaborative and hands-on. Students do the work while I guide them step by step, which helps you learn faster and retain what you’ve learned.
I specialize in beginners, but I also work with photographers who already know the basics and want to sharpen their skills or develop a stronger creative eye.
Lessons can be online or in person in San Diego. When possible, I like to meet in visually interesting locations so we can practice using real light, real scenes, and real photographic challenges.
Photography becomes much easier when someone experienced can show you what actually matters and what you can safely ignore. My goal is to help you understand your camera, build confidence, and start creating photographs you’re genuinely excited about.
If you're ready to move beyond Auto mode and really learn photography, I’d be happy to help.
