About James
Hello!
I'm James. Let me introduce myself.
- University of Sheffield - BA Philosophy (Hons.), 2.1
- A-Level Philosophy & Ethics, A
- Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), N3
- 140 hour TEFL Certification
From a young age I've always wanted to teach. Education is the way to better understand the world around us, and improve our lives in profound ways. My academic background is in philosophy, although I have read many books on history, politics, languages, economics, physics, etc.
Philosophy is incredibly interesting! As a discipline it addresses life's big questions. It helps us to conceptualise our lives, the world around us, and meaning and purpose. I hope to bring this passion and enthusiasm into the lessons!
My academic background at university comprises: Metaphysics, Ethics, Rationalism, Epistemology, Logic, Ancient Greek Philosophy, and Philosophy of Religion, among other things. I also volunteered to teach philosophy to Primary School students during this time.
Other interests: football, music, chess

I incorporate a comprehensive strategy of guided development. I gauge strengths and weaknesses, and then establish a personalised plan that focusses on improving confidence and subject knowledge.
I like to work through theories step by step, involving the student every step of the way to ensure that they fully understand the content. This is best achieved in a seminar-style format, where students drive the direction of the discussion.
I supplement subject knowledge with exam preparation, addressing structure, flow, and clarity of arguments.
In a typical lesson, we will go over a particular thinker, theme, or argument. We will discuss background knowledge, consider the idea, then evaluate by contrasting with other thinkers and counterarguments.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
James is friendly and patient. He takes Philosophy classes with me and always is available to provide assistance if I don't understand something. He is an enthusiastic student and learner, which comes through when he teaches.
I've known James as a friend for about 3 years. In that time we have frequently studied together as we did some of the same subjects. I can confidently say he possesses a clear enough understanding of multiple subjects. He has the ability to explain them all in a variety of manners, meaning he can tailor how he explains them. This has personally helped me in my own study and I can confidently say it has also helped my classmates who studied with him.
I met James at the University of Sheffield, and we have known each other for two years. James is a hard-working and very knowledgeable tutor in Philosophy and Politics, reflected by his impressive A-Level and university end-of-year results. He is friendly, down to earth and will help students in any way he can.
