About Anna
I hold a PhD in English from the University of Toronto and am a PhD-trained educator, editor, and learning strategist with over twelve years of extensive experience supporting learners across a wide variety of contexts. I have worked with university, high school, and elementary students, as well as ESL/ELL learners and adults seeking tutoring and standardized test preparation. My approach is student-centered, supportive, and highly individualized, with a particular strength in explaining complex material clearly, strengthening writing and critical thinking skills, and helping learners break large tasks into manageable, achievable steps. Drawing on my experience as a lead writing teaching assistant and writing consultant, I support students with academic writing, research, test preparation, organization, and long-term learning strategies, always with a focus on building confidence, clarity, and independence.

My Approach as a Tutor
- My approach to tutoring is student-centred, collaborative, and adaptive. I see tutoring not just as helping students “get through” material, but as supporting them in developing confidence, clarity, and transferable academic skills. I tailor each lesson to the student’s goals, learning style, and level of experience, while maintaining clear structure and high expectations.
Teaching Methodology and Techniques
- I combine explanation, guided practice, and active dialogue. Rather than lecturing, I prioritize:
- Conceptual clarity: breaking down complex ideas into manageable parts and connecting them to what the student already knows
- Scaffolded learning: gradually increasing difficulty as confidence grows
- Socratic questioning: encouraging students to articulate their thinking and identify gaps themselves
- Applied examples: using real assignments, texts, or problems to make learning immediately relevant
- I also emphasize metacognitive skills—how to read critically, structure arguments, plan assignments, and approach problem-solving independently.
Typical Lesson Structure
While lessons are flexible, a typical session includes:
- Check-in and goal setting – identifying what the student wants to work on and any upcoming deadlines
- Targeted instruction – focused explanation or demonstration of key concepts or skills
- Guided practice – working through examples together, with feedback in real time
- Independent application – the student applies the skill while I observe and support
- Wrap-up and next steps – summarizing key takeaways and identifying what to practice before the next session
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
What distinguishes me is my ability to balance rigour with approachability. Students often tell me they feel both supported and intellectually challenged. I am especially attentive to:
- adapting explanations for different learning styles
- helping students articulate ideas clearly in writing and discussion
- building long-term academic skills, not just short-term fixes
- I also bring a strong awareness of academic expectations at the university level and help students learn how to meet—and navigate—those standards with confidence.
Who My Lessons Are For
My tutoring is suited for:
- High school, undergraduate, and graduate students
- Students working in humanities and social sciences (e.g. essay writing, critical reading, theory, research skills)
- Students seeking support with assignments, exam preparation, academic writing, or study strategies
- Learners who want to strengthen confidence, organization, and independent thinking
- Academics of all levels who want to improve their writing skills
