About Sam

My life has been full of challenges and surprises, and I have a restless enthusiasm for my own learning, and the learning of my tutees. I worked as an English Mentor in Cathedral Academy, I have tutored English modules at the University of St. Andrews, and I have taught extensively. I have taught at primary school, secondary school, and continuing education level. Elsewhere, I have worked for a refugee charity, as a care-worker, as a proof-reader, as a journalist, and as an author. I have a poetry collection published, Poems Sketched Upon the M60, and writing published in The Guardian, and The Tablet. I have academic papers published, and perform my poetry. My own education is in York, Oxford, and St. Andrews.

I truly care about people, however, so ultimately I am interested in how I can share this learning with others. This is my passion, and what I am here for, so let's talk about how this can benefit you. I am not fazed by new tutoring challenges.

About the lesson

I have worked as a care-worker, an academic, and a school-teacher. I work by carefully cultiviating personal, lasting relationships with my tutees, fully getting to know them and their interests and discovering intuitively what the most effective ways to tutor them are. I can work quickly to get results in exams, or slowly to build complete understanding. I have a particular vocation in encouraging curiosity among high-achieving pupils. Many of my tutees have gone on to get into private schools, and achieve Distinctions at MA level, and get into Oxford and Cambridge.
