About Helena
I am an editor for an anthropology journal dedicated to creative, ethnographic storytelling, which deeply informs my approach to teaching and thinking about the discipline. I have been teaching on and off for the past four years and genuinely enjoy the process of learning alongside my students. For me, teaching is an active, reciprocal practice where curiosity persists even as I guide others. My own research focuses on memory, sound, and urbanism within the Iranian diaspora, which informs my approach to theory, ethnography, and writing in the classroom. Anthropology plays a central role in my life, shaping how I read, write, and understand the world, and I love sharing this way of thinking with others. The analytical, interpretive, and writing skills developed through anthropology are highly transferable, supporting students across related disciplines such as psychology, literature, and sociology.

Teaching anthropology is as much a dialogue as it is a practice. My approach is conversational and student-led: I talk through key theories and texts with students to actively engage with the material, encouraging critical thinking rather than memorisation. Lessons typically last 60 minutes and combine discussion, close reading, and structured planning. I place strong emphasis on building clear essay outlines and reusable templates, helping students gain confidence in constructing arguments and writing academically as well as personally. I have experience supporting GCSE, A-Level, undergraduate, and postgraduate students, as well as mature learners returning to study, particularly those seeking clarity, structure, and confidence in their ideas.
