About Harry

During my undergraduate degree in mathematics I developed a deep interest in mathematical logic, and with time also in the philosophical questions which surround it. I went on to complete a master's degree in philosophy, focusing on the philosophy of logic, language and mathematics, and am now studying for a PhD in philosophy, focusing on pragmatic foundations for non-classical logics.

I really enjoy teaching logic and philosophy, both because they are my favourite things to talk about, and because I know lots of people find topics in language and logic to be a more difficult part of philosophy. I find it very rewarding to help people become more confident with formal logic, semantic theory and to hopefully show them how interesting and fruitful these ideas can be across many philosophical questions.

Who my lessons are for:

Philosophy of language is one of the central topics in contemporary philosophy, if not the most central. Formal logic is a key topic in philosophy, mathematics, computer science and linguistics, to name just a few subjects. Many students studying undergraduate or graduate degrees find logic and philosophy of language difficult however. I find it really rewarding to help students who are struggling with the content, and hope to help them discover all of the exciting areas that the study of logic opens up. (And also to pass their exams!)

These subjects are also great for independent study, whether as a jumping off point for more institutional study, or just as an interesting hobby to stretch your comprehension and reasoning abilities, as well as to improve critical thinking skills, attention to detail and clarity of argument.

What to expect in lessons:

Lessons can be tailored to specific books and learning objectives that students have, either based on the requirements of their university course or their own interests, or I can plan general overviews of important topics in the philosophy of language or formal logic.

After explaining the content in lessons, we will go over questions you have in about readings, ideas of your own that you have, and work through problem questions step by step. I will provide feedback and guidance to help students develop confidence working on philosophical questions and logical problems themselves.

My Experience:

I have delivered tutorials on formal and philosophical logic for multiple groups of undergraduate students at the University of St Andrews. I have also tutored mathematics in the past for a range of school ages.

I have first-class degrees in mathematics and philosophy, and my PhD research concerns formal semantics and pragmatics of non-classical logic.
