About Sandra

My name is Sandra Gomes, and I am finishing a PhD in Physical Geography, and I have a Qualified Teacher Status. I consider myself a naturalist; my background training and education have prepared me for equal enthusiasm in biological, geological and archaeological fields. I have a BSc in Biology, post-graduates studies in geology and a master in Quaternary ( Archaeology/Geology). In my professional career, I have experienced a variety of jobs, including teaching science for approximately 9 years and 3 (part-time) at University level. I have always enjoyed the direct teaching element and enjoy a hands-on approach, helping the students to be autonomous, confident in testing hypothesis, to try new approaches and learning how to think about science. Using experimental sciences in the classroom to develop young minds proved to be an amazing and rewarding experience for me. I also have experience tutoring adults I have delivered several courses for councils across Portugal related to environmental practices and health and safety subjects. I started my professional career as a teacher and completed an internship teaching Biology and Geology (Earth and Life Sciences) in secondary schools. After that, I worked in comprehensive schools (Portugal) teaching students between 12 & 18 years old. Since 2017, I have been a Graduate teaching assistant (GTA) at the University of Manchester co-teaching several modules related to Physical geography. My expertise is in palynology/biostratigraphy.
My work experience is quite diverse and has been gained in schools, research projects, in a geological consultancy company and later as a PhD doctoral researcher. As such, I have the scientific background and experience to help students from the high-school to a graduate-level in varied areas, ranging from geology, archaeology, biology and physical geography.

About the lesson

I believe students need to play an active role in acquiring their own knowledge, I will be their coach and facilitator in order to promote the comprehension of the subjects.
I enjoy a varied approach (blended teaching) depending upon the subject to be taught /explained and the doubts presented and adjusted to the student's style of learning. I can offer: interactive presentations, exercises, student portfolios, role-playing, oriented/guided lecture, demonstration, guided videos, tutorials, clarification sessions. Furthermore, I had the experience of helpline tutor (responding online high-school students doubts) for around two years.

For high-school students, my rate is £12/h, pack 5h: £55, pack 10h: £100
For University students my rate is £24/h, pack 5h: £110, pack 10h: £200. Different prices could be discussed according to the complexity of the topic /subject.
I also can analyse/discuss projects/theses dissertations related to biostratigraphy, palynology (palaeoecology, palaeoclimatology).
