About Jessica
My approach to teaching is influenced by the PhD I’m currently undertaking at UCL in clinical, education, and health psychology. I have found that by applying this scientific knowledge about the brain, its development and learning to my teaching approach and curriculum development has supported me in helping students to progress faster by developing an evidence base of how students learn.

I am an experienced A-Level, GCSE and KS3, KS4 English teacher, having worked extensively with students in groups and one-to-one. I am currently the English lead for KS5 in my school and take great joy in developing the curriculum for them in a way that makes their learning enjoyable and highly supported. Having also worked as an A-Level examiner (Pearson exam board) and curriculum developer for a group of 40 schools (Ark Schools), I have an acute understanding of the specific requirements students are asked to meet and the methods best placed to support them in meeting these milestones.
I think the best way to summarise my approach to teaching is in reflecting on what a student in one of my A-Level classes said to me recently while I was preparing the small group for upcoming assessments, “Miss, you think of everything!” While I know this can’t be true as much as I would like it to be, I think this student’s view points to what I value greatly in my approach to teaching: a highly detailed one. I consider the components needed for student success based on, of course, assessment specifications, but also the student’s own hopes and ambitions, and then consider in great detail how to support the student in reaching that goal. In practice, this often looks like me writing bespoke, adapted curriculum and revision material based on students’ developing needs, providing specific and extended feedback, finding individual book, article and resource recommendations based on the student’s interests and current needs as well as using a laser focus to act on the highest leverage feedback to make big strides in progress. I’m not apologetic about being very results oriented.
My students know I’m ambitious for them and their futures: All of my current year 12 students achieved at least one grade above their expectations based on GCSEs in recent assessments. My recent GCSE class achieved 17 grade 9s in English literature amongst 32 students (national average is 2% grade 9s), with one student going from a grade 5 to grade 9 in year 11 with me, 100% of my GCSE English language resit class passed their November resits (national average is 20%). I attribute these successes to the great determination of students and their enthusiasm for being committed to an approach that is highly meticulous and detail oriented.
True development does not just sit with exam results however, and I enjoy fostering a love of learning that I have so fortunately had instilled in me. Students of mine enjoy learning the rhetoric of persuasive discussion and debates linked to their curriculum, but also their further interests around psychology and sociology, broader sciences, history and politics. They engage with university-level critical interpretations at GCSE and A-Level, preparing them to think critically about life and the human condition itself, which I feel is the higher purpose of study.

Perfect! I'm delighted we have found Jess to tutor our daughter for GCSE English, she is absolutely excellent and I highly recommend her to others seeking an outstanding English tutor. She is extremely dedicated, thorough, and exam focused, and my daughter has found her lessons encouraging and engaging. I am grateful for her detailed feedback after tutor sessions. Thank you Jess.

Jess has been a fantastic tutor who has helped with achieving B2 level in IETLS. She is thorough, patient and very knowledgeable
Extremely professional, reliable and knowledgable.
Jessica seems to have such a high empathy towards students and makes you feel comfortable and helpful in a non critical way whilst encouraging to dig deeper into your mind to improve your work.Jessica helped my two daughters who are at different stages in school, one in KS2 going into secondary and one in KS4. Across the lessons, Jessica has always been very kind and patient and the girls actually look forward to their individual lessons each week! In particular, Jessica always provides additional resources for my older daughter going into GCSEs, like flashcards that she makes specifically -which my daughter really relies on for revision.
High recommendation for Jessica. In addition to well-structured weekly A-Level sessions, she marked any extra work I did across the week outside of sessions. I went from a C grade at end of year 12 to an A grade in year 13, which I really needed for the course I was applying to!
Jess tutored my son with English language and literature GCSE over two years, getting him from a grade 4 to a grade 8. The progress he made over this time was incredible and the best part was that he fostered a real joy for the subject when he didn't enjoy it before.
Thanks so much Jess for all the support!Jessica tutored me with English A Level as I was struggling to reach the level I wanted. She really helped get my grade up and I'm going to my first choice uni this autumn. I think what really helped was that she has a lot of experience with the exams and so could tell me exactly what I needed to do to improve
Jess tutored me English A Level as I was struggling with technique for the exams. She really helped me get my grade up and I got into my first choice uni for this autumn. I think what really helped was that she has a lot of insight working for exams and so was really specific about what I needed to do to improve
