About Jonathan

I am a professional academic tutor and proofreader with over ten years of experience working in higher education, and I am a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. I have guided many students to success at a range of UK universities, consistently helping them achieve high marks in their dissertations.

Most recently, I have worked with academics at the London School of Economics and SOAS on published articles and books (references available on request). I also proofread and edit hundreds of dissertations per year.

I have a PhD from Kings College London, an MSc from SOAS, and a BA from the London School of Economics, in addition to years of teaching experience within higher education. I am a native English speaker, with a TEFL qualification, and I have also taught English as a secondary language.

About the lesson

I will start by conducting a thorough assessment of where you are in your academic life, including looking at past essays, your feedback, but also considering how you are feeling about academic life. This allows me to tailor my advice and tuition to you as a student, and as a person.

Over the course of our first session I will gauge how your thesis is going, and also whether there are any aspects of your study skills which can be improved. I will also consider the course guidelines, and marking scheme adopted by your department

I can then offer tuition and advice which ranges from assisting with your initial research and approaches to studying, through your planning of your thesis, to a final proof-reading and deep edit before submission.

Whether you need help articulating your ideas, developing your note taking, discipline, and planning, or your writing skills, I will identify the stage of the process where I can help you the most.

My background is in Development Studies, Anthropology, and Geography, but I also have extensive experience teaching study skills and the English language. Over the past ten years I have also proofread hundreds of published academic articles and books.
