About Sam
I am passionate about teaching politics and philosophy at a variety of levels. I have developed my skill set over multiple years, and it is my pleasure not only to build students' knowledge base but to work with students to increase their confidence and critical thinking skills.
I have developed my expertise over the previous ten years as a scholar of politics and philosophy (with a specialism in political theory) with significant experience in tutoring, lecturing, developing research projects with dissertation students, and tutoring A-level students. I have worked with a wide variety of abilities, and have actively encouraged students to think of success as a personal goal and not to focus on others.
I am a professional and have developed my tutorial resources over many years. Every year, I revisit my materials and develop them to ensure they are the best they can be. I provide informative and non-judgemental qualitative feedback on all work and develop essay questions for students to answer. I work at the student's own pace, and I am always happy to revisit material if a student requires it.
I am calm, confident, approachable, and empathetic. I always meet students at their level and develop my lessons and demeanour towards what they find most comfortable. I always update parents on progress and function as a collaborator.

I approach lessons with a welcoming approach to my students, which makes the lesson a safe space for students to actively engage with the material. I adopt an approach which is guided and structured, utilising PowerPoint and outside materials to help the student. This guides the student along a clear and coherent pathway for the lesson and the units over a period of time. As a result, my sessions are open, structured, and guided not only in the lesson space but across the entirety of our time as tutor and student.
My sessions are fully interactive, which builds on my pedagogical research and enables the student not only to understand but also to critically evaluate information in the session. I actively ask my students questions and scaffold the theoretical work alongside practical examples. I emphasise that we all get things wrong, which encourages the student to engage with the material and allows them to speak up. This is built on my 'call-in' culture that I have developed with all my students.
This helps build student confidence to actively engage material as it slowly becomes second nature. I encourage students not only to understand the material but to process the material and assess it in real time. This enables the student to grow intellectually as they begin to adopt a mature approach to studying the material. My lessons are usually scheduled for 1 hour, but I am also happy to schedule lessons for 2 hours with a 5-minute break in between for the student to get the most from both hours.
I have a PhD in Politics from the University of Leeds and have been a tutor for six years. I have worked as a private tutor for several years and worked with students moving from E grades to B and A grades. Furthermore, I have undertaken teacher training and pedagogical research on the role of feedback, verbal interaction, and AI with students, granting me further specialisms. I am also familiar working with students with ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia.
My lessons are generally focused towards those at GCSE, A-level, and degree level. However, I have also worked with ages between 11-14 for organisations such as Oxford Scholastica.

Sam is an amazing explainer. The way he describes and explains the past/current political situations always provokes my thinking in politics, which makes me to ask follow up questions and/or question my thinking.
