About Mathieu

Hello! I am Mathieu, a linguist with a strong research background and extensive teaching experience at the university level—academia is my primary professional field. For over ten years, I have taught French accent reduction to speakers of more than 30 different native languages. I have also taught general French at various U.S. institutions, including Harvard University and Hamilton College, as well as Chinese at both university and high school levels in France. I hold a PhD in Linguistics, along with MAs in Linguistics, French Pedagogy/FLE (certified DELF examiner), and Chinese. I also earned BAs in History, Chinese, Law (an undergraduate degree offered in France), and Anthropology—in France, education is both affordable and excellent! In addition to my academic training, I am a former professional musician with teaching experience in violin, viola, and music theory (2006-2012). I am fluent in English and Chinese, and I can communicate OK-ishly in Japanese and several Romance languages. Through my work in linguistics research, I have developed a structural understanding of approximately 20 languages, and I possess basic speaking skills in some of them.

With a strong foundation in phonetics, phonology, and music, I offer a unique approach to accent training—blending expert knowledge transmission with ear training, articulatory practice, and reflective techniques. My rich and diverse, multi-theory background (articulatory, verbo-tonal, melted into a specific frame I call instrumental), allows me to tailor each lesson to your specific needs, may they be segmental (specific consonants or vowels) or suprasegmental (intonation, rhythm, accentuation). Over more than a decade, I’ve worked with learners from over 30 native language backgrounds. This experience has helped me develop methods that are both flexible and effective. Whatever your challenges, we’ll find a way—together—to improve your pronunciation.
