About Samantha
I am a PhD-trained linguist, researcher and experienced university educator specialising in phonetics, phonology and acoustic analysis. I have taught university phonetics and phonology and use Praat extensively in my own research on vowels, consonants, pitch, tone and speech timing. My research has involved fieldwork, acoustic analysis, corpus methods and real language data.
I have experience teaching university students, including Chinese students studying in English-speaking academic environments, and understand that linguistics can sometimes feel especially challenging when both the concepts and the academic terminology are unfamiliar. I aim to explain difficult ideas clearly, patiently and from more than one angle until they make sense.
Alongside phonetics and phonology, I am comfortable teaching sociolinguistics, morphology and syntax, as well as helping students develop stronger analytical and research skills.
I particularly enjoy helping students make technical concepts and acoustic-analysis methods feel systematic and manageable.
