About Larra

Before finishing my PhD in 2023, I completed a year of secondary school teaching after graduating from UCL with an integrated masters in Mathematics and Physics. I have a passion for education, and I'm eager to help students reach their full potential. I achieved a 1st in my degree and got involved in various projects at university. Being a tutor involves portraying complex scientific information and presenting it engagingly. I hope to share my passion for mathematics and physics with young people. At university, I was an Engineers Without Borders Outreach volunteer, when I travelled to different schools to give talks promoting STEM subjects, particularly towards young women. This involved great communication and organisational skills, as well as making a strong rapport between myself and the students to ensure students feel confident and empowered in pursuing their chosen career paths. I believe that my experiences have prepared me for future work, and I am keen to get involved with any task given to me, no matter how big or small. I am a motivated, enthusiastic and self-driven individual who always strives to do my best, and hopes to share my passion for education.

About the lesson

Based on my experience as a tutor, I will: Find out what the type of learner my tutee is, and use that type as our main source of learning. Each person has their own style of learning, and as tutors, we have to be able to use their strengths to ensure that they can learn in the best possible way for them. I believe that tutoring sessions should be active – as a tutor, I am here to fill in the gaps that the student has. As a tutor, it is important to teach students how to be independent learners – and my ultimate goal as a tutor is to teach my students how to learn. As a tutor, I make sure that I help students with their study skills and techniques. I find that teaching students in various methods helps them get a better grasp of the concepts we aim to learn. In every lesson, I give the student a chance to reflect on their learning. I have a traffic light system: red means they do not understand a certain topic completely, amber means they know it but need more practice, and green means they are confident with the topic. I ensure that my tutee tells me where they are at throughout the lesson but also, I ask my tutee how our whole lesson went at the end. This gives me a better idea of what we should start with for the next lesson, and if I should plan out a different type of teaching on a certain topic for next time. It is important to be able to self-reflect, and this is something that I know I would like my tutee to learn to continuously practice.
