About Ollie

I have degrees in Ancient and Modern History (BA, first class) and Creative Writing (postgraduate, distinction), both at the University of Oxford. I am currently studying for a PhD at King's College London, while working as a committed and enthusiastic private tutor. As of November 2022, I have completed over a thousand paid hours of tutoring.

I can explain things clearly and communicate my interest in many different subjects, while getting to know each pupil and tailoring my approach especially for them. I would be particularly keen to tutor the 11+, or my three favourite subjects at GCSE or A-level: English, Medieval History and Ancient History. I also offer courses in modern television drama, which I find fascinating and a lot more academically engaging than most people expect; and a related course in The Wire and Sociology.

I have full documentation; my most recent DBS check dates from March 2019. I went to Eton College - where I earned three A-level A*s, a short-Pre-U Distinction 3 and ten A*s at GCSE - so I am a big fan of this site because I like the idea of giving something back, to help make sure that everybody has the chance of a great education.

I prefer to tutor in person, and would be very happy to discuss Covid19 precautions and social distancing before the first lesson. It is my priority to make sure that you and your child are comfortable and safe.

My lessons are always tailored to each individual pupil, but the same tutoring philosophy applies to all of them. I aim to engage the pupils so that they enjoy my lessons rather than finding them a chore, as this is the best way to get them to learn. I find this works best in 90-minute lessons. Once I've got a pupil interested in the topic, I mix fun lesson aspects with more formal work and encourage them to develop both their strengths and their weaknesses. Positive reinforcement, and nurturing their keenness to do well, are key. The improvement in their confidence is as valuable as the improvement in their learning.
