About Nicola

I've been teaching in various different forms for 6 years, and there is no greater joy than seeing students progress week by week in terms of ability and confidence. Teaching is my passion, and I love exploring new teaching methods. In particular, I encourage independent learning, so that students learn transferable skills that can be applied to new scenarios and contexts, which will set them in good steed for their future education and/or career.

I teach Maths and English, predominatly for KS3 and KS4, including GCSE preparation. This includes both English language and literature, so that I can support the study of both fiction and non-fiction texts, including (but not limited to) Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, and various poems from the exam board anthologies.

I have also worked with KS5 students to help them in their preparation for their university studies. I am particularly able to assist with this transition as I also work with university students, offering advice on improving their academic writing.

This wide range of experience working with students of various different ages means that I have been able to develop my teaching style so that I can tailor it to the needs of each individual student. As a result, I have obtained several certifications, including Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, the Horizon Award, and various certificates from the Open University (a full list can be provided upon request).

I have a First class Bachelors degree in English and History, a Masters degree in Literature and Culture, and I am soon to complete a PhD in English Literature on the use of emotions in British anti-slavery literature. As my PhD research may suggest, I am a strong advocate of decolonising the curriculum, to include more diversity in terms of the race, class, and gender of writers that are studied in English language and literature.

About the lesson

I teach skills by demonstration and then encourage independent learning so that students can transfer their reading and critical analysis skills to new texts to support their classroom learning. I always tailor my teaching approach to each student's individual needs.

I am flexible in terms of the format that the teaching can take place, either in person or online (for example through Teams, Zoom, or Skype). I am also flexible in terms of how many students I can teach in a given session, which can vary from 1-to-1 appointments with students, through to group sessions with up to 20 students.
