About Fan
Hello! My name is Fan. My name can be understood as “down-to-earth” in Chinese, and that reflects the approach I bring to teaching: thoughtful, supportive, and practical.
I hold a PhD in English Literature, with research experience in environmental ethics, experimental poetry, and postcolonial writing. Years of academic research, teaching, and writing have given me a strong understanding of what makes an argument persuasive, a thesis focused, and an essay clear, coherent, and engaging.
I particularly enjoy helping students with English Literature, literary analysis, and academic writing across the humanities. Whether you are working on an essay, dissertation, research proposal, close reading, or another academic assignment, I can help you develop your ideas and express them with greater clarity and confidence.
My tutoring goes beyond correcting grammar or polishing individual sentences. I focus on helping you become a stronger reader, thinker, and writer. We can work together on close reading, developing a clear argument, turning broad ideas into a focused thesis, using textual evidence effectively, structuring essays and paragraphs, improving academic style, and refining your own writing.
I also help students develop a more systematic and confident approach to reading and interpretation. Rather than teaching you to work against your instincts, I want to help you understand and refine them. Often, a reader already senses that a passage is interesting, strange, moving, or important before they can fully explain why. We can start from that instinct and then look more closely at the language, structure, imagery, form, or context that creates that response.
My role is not to replace your instincts as a reader, but to help you make them more precise, systematic, and persuasive. Over time, literary analysis can begin to feel less like searching for the “correct” answer and more like learning how to trust, question, and develop your own interpretation.
At the heart of my teaching is the exchange of ideas. I see tutoring as a collaborative conversation rather than simply giving students answers. I want to create a space where you can test ideas, follow your curiosity, ask questions, explore different interpretations, and develop your own perspective.
My aim is not only to help you produce a stronger essay, but to help you understand why an argument works, how to recognise weaknesses in your own writing, and how to make more independent decisions as a reader and writer.
I also understand that academic writing can feel overwhelming, especially when you have interesting ideas but are unsure how to organise them into a clear argument. I can help you break that process into manageable steps and develop strategies that you can continue to use independently in future work.
For Mandarin-speaking students, I can also explain difficult literary, theoretical, or academic concepts in Mandarin when helpful, while supporting you in developing stronger academic English.
Ultimately, my goal is to help you become a more confident, independent, and thoughtful reader and writer. I want close reading to become something more natural and enjoyable — not simply a task you complete for an essay, but a way of engaging more deeply with literature, so that reading can feel more like a source of curiosity and pleasure than a chore

I first started teaching in high school, when I volunteered with a non-profit organisation in Shanghai, teaching English to children from migrant worker families. It was there that I first discovered how much I enjoyed teaching, and I began designing lessons and creating my own materials around my students’ needs.
While studying at university in the UK, I also worked as a freelance tutor, teaching Mandarin to young children from scratch.
During my PhD, I completed formal tutor training and led small-group tutorials for undergraduate students, guiding them through the reading, discussion, and analysis of literary texts.
These experiences have given me the chance to work with students of different ages and backgrounds. What I enjoy most about teaching is the exchange of ideas—thinking through questions together, solving problems, and learning from one another.

I’ve known Fan since university. She studied in the US and the UK for over ten years, so she is very fluent in English. She also holds a PhD in English Literature, which means she has not only an excellent command of the language but also a deep understanding of its cultural and literary aspects. I would highly recommend her classes. I always find that talking to her helps me reflect on my own life and studies, and I’m sure her thoughtful and insightful approach would benefit anyone learning with her.
Fan is a very patient and knowledgeable teacher. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to improve their Chinese quickly. She is also very nice.
I am grateful to have known Fan and worked with her on my writing for the last six years! Fan provides excellent, thoughtful feedback, not only on "how" my writing works but also the "why" behind what I'm trying to say. This has really improved my writing and expanded my thinking.
I especially value Fan's warmth and curiosity. She is easy to talk to and really makes an effort to connect. Highly recommend!
What I really appreciate about Fan is that she is really patient, encouraging and kind towards everyone. She is genuinely passionate about what she does and you can feel that good energy when you are interacting with her. You'll never be bored! She is easy to talk to and comes up with so many interesting topics to discuss. 10/10 you won't regret booking with her!
