About Nidia
B.S. in Microbiology from the National Autonomous University of Honduras, focusing on clinical microbiology and human diseases. M.S. degree in Veterinary Medicine from University of Illinois. During that time, I was actively involved in molecular biology. The core of my M.S. thesis, focused on the impact of colostrum and nursing environment on the intestinal microbiome and mucosal immune gene expression in neonatal pigs. Results from conducted studies and previous experience have led me to develop strong research interest in immunology particularly in the area of gastrointestinal health. In addition, through my graduate studies I have developed strong interest in teaching. This took me to complete a Certificate in Foundations of Teaching at the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) at UIUC. I strongly believe that my academic experience, laboratory skills, and determination have prepared me to be an effective graduate student and researcher. PhD degree in Comparative Medicine and Integrative biology at Michigan State University, mainly focusing on the pathophysiology of stress-induced gastrointestinal disorders. Specifically how early life adversity impacts lifetime mast cell phenotype and function and it’s link with immune disease across the lifespan.
