About Ryan
My teaching began at James Madison University where I tutored for 3 years in courses ranging from calculus 1 to organic chemistry 2 with the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society. During this time I also taught general chemistry 1 as a Peer Assisted Student Success Leader for one semester, taught organic chemistry labs 1&2 as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for 2 years, and taught 3 students how to conduct professional chemistry research as an Undergraduate Researcher for 2 years. At the University of Virginia, I have been teaching organic chemistry labs 1&2 for nearly two years as a Graduate Teaching Assistant with one semester as Head Teaching Assistant. I also conduct professional synthetic organic chemistry research as I work toward my PhD in organic chemistry. I have extensive experience teaching a wide variety of students in a wide variety of settings with great success.

My teaching is done entirely online over Zoom but with an iPad so that sessions feel like a personalized Khan Academy video. This format allows for easy recording of tutor sessions and written notes, which I frequently send to current students. For students with no foundational knowledge, I take extra time to meet them where they are and expand upon their knowledge until they have mastered the course material. For students with lots of foundational knowledge primarily looking to fill gaps, I place a heavy emphasis on their ability to solve complex problems without assistance. I have nearly 5 years experience tutoring courses ranging from calculus 1 to organic chemistry 2 at James Madison University and the University of Virginia. I typically tutor college level students, however, I do have experience tutoring high school math as well.
