About Daniel

I am an aspiring Musicologist and Cultural Historian, and a candidate for a PhD in Music at the University of Cambridge. I recently completed an MPhil in Music at the University of Cambridge, specialising in the cultural history and musical aesthetics of Germany and France in the Long Nineteenth Century. As a result, my academic expertise is strongest in the related fields of the history of philosophy, the philosophy of music, and nineteenth-century music history. I am comfortable teaching music and musical aesthetics to an undergraduate level, but I also teach History and English Literature to secondary school students and A-level students. I also have intermediate reading skills in French. To support myself through a PhD in Music at the University of Cambridge, I have decided to expand my professional tutoring services. In addition to my responsibilities as a supervisor and teacher of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge, I will be offering private lessons in Philosophy, History, Music, English Literature, and Violin Performance. Music education is my passion; it is precisely because I want a career that combines academic research and teaching that I am pursuing a career as an academic musicologist. As a private tutor, I especially enjoy teaching students who, like me, attended a comprehensive school, and aspire to pursue higher education in music and the wider humanities. My goal as an educator is to help my students to achieve the best results, of course. Equally, I also strive to ensure that I impart a passion for ideas, and a commitment to academic excellence, that will sustain my students in developing curiosity and critical thinking skills.

About the lesson

Approach to Teaching – I favour a structured approach. I devise lesson plans in advance of every lesson, catered to the student's specific needs. – Academic lessons tend to be structured around specific sections of the syllabus, or particular topics that students require help with. – I employ a seminar style format. I flesh out ideas with the aid of quotations, other audio-visual resources, and analytical commentary. I structure my lesson plans with a view to providing gaps, in which students are able to ask questions about the content. I am also happy for students to interrupt the flow of the lesson if a burning question arises. – I use PowerPoint to provide students with a variety of resources and visual stimuli. – Violin lessons tend to be carefully planned to focus on specific technical aspects of performance. To train musicality, I often teach this through the use of études, studies, and also pieces of repertoire. – I am open to considering student repertoire suggestions if they are particularly passionate about a certain piece. Lesson Structure – Academic lessons tend to be 45 minutes to an hour in length, but I can adapt my teaching schedule to provide students with additional support if needed. – Typically violin lessons range in length from 30 minutes to an hour, but I am flexible: I am more than happy to devise a lesson structure that caters for a student's requirements. Credentials – I am studying for a PhD in Music at the University of Cambridge. – I hold an MPhil in Music from the University of Cambridge, where I specialised in Historical Musicology and Musical Aesthetics. – I have a first-class music degree (74.4%) from the University of Manchester, where I won three Hargreaves Prizes for Academic Achievement. – I have worked as an Assistant Music Teacher, which involved teaching Music A-Level students. – I have worked as a private violin teacher for 7 years (since I was 17). I have taught a variety of students, from beginners starting their instrumental training, to more advanced performers looking to improve their technical facility and performance skills. – I have an extensive portfolio of performing credits on documentary films. Recent highlights include the BAFTA-nominated score for the BBC docuseries on Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein 'House of Maxwell' (BBC2, 2022), and 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In' (Netflix) (Passion Pictures / Universal Pictures) (2021). – I have extensive experience as an orchestral musician and chamber music performer. I led the University of Cambridge Experimental Music Ensemble (CUEME) when I was studying for my master's degree at the University of Cambridge. I also led the University of Manchester Chamber Orchestra in the second year of my undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester, and premiered a good deal of new music with The Eskandari String Quartet. – I have performed at the West Road Concert Hall (University of Cambridge), the Lee Tseng Hall (Wolfson College Cambridge), Buxton International Festival, Manchester International Festival, and the Bridgewater Hall. – I achieved a distinction (92%) in my ATCL Diploma in violin performance, and a First (78%) in the final violin recital of my undergraduate degree. Ability of Students – Academic level: Beginner through to GCSE, A-Level, and Undergraduate Music and History of Philosophy – Violin: Beginner to first-level Diploma (ATCL or DipABRSM)
