About Fan

Hi! I’m Fan, a native Mandarin speaker from China. I help students develop richer, more confident Chinese through reading, vocabulary building, natural expression, and conversation.

My lessons focus not only on learning new words, but on understanding how words and expressions are actually used in context. I want to help you move beyond simple sentences and become more comfortable expressing more complex ideas in Chinese — whether you are telling a story, describing an experience, sharing an opinion, explaining your point of view, or discussing a topic in greater depth.

I don’t believe every student should be taught in the same way. As I get to know you, I pay attention to your strengths, areas for improvement, interests, and learning habits. I then adapt the pace, materials, topics, and activities so that each lesson feels relevant, engaging, and useful to you.

I recently completed a PhD in English Literature in the UK and speak English at C2 level. My academic and teaching experience has trained me to analyse language carefully, explain ideas clearly, and adapt materials to different learners. If something in Chinese feels difficult or confusing, I can explain it clearly in English and help you understand not only what it means, but also why, when, and how it is used.

In our lessons, we can work with short texts, stories, articles, dialogues, and topics that match your level and interests. We’ll explore useful vocabulary and expressions together, then practise using them in conversation so that they become part of the Chinese you can actually use rather than words you simply memorise.

My goal is to create a supportive learning environment where you feel comfortable experimenting with Chinese, asking questions, and expressing yourself with greater depth and confidence. As I get to know you over the first few lessons, I’ll continue adjusting the way we work together so that the lessons suit you as closely as possible.

If you’d like to expand your vocabulary, understand Chinese more deeply, and express your own ideas more naturally and confidently, I’d be very happy to work with you.

I started teaching when I was 16, volunteering with a non-profit organisation in Shanghai and teaching English to children from migrant worker families.

As I continued my education, I also gained professional experience as an editor with CCTV International, China’s international television network, and National Geographic China. In these roles, I worked with both English- and Chinese-language materials, editing and adapting content across the two languages. This experience developed my sensitivity to vocabulary, tone, context, and natural expression, and taught me to pay close attention to the ways meaning can shift between English and Chinese. It also strengthened my ability to communicate ideas clearly and appropriately for different audiences.

During my PhD, I received formal teaching training and worked as a tutor for undergraduate discussion classes. I guided students in reading, discussing, and analysing literary texts, while encouraging them to develop their own interpretations and express their ideas with greater confidence, depth, and clarity.

Together, these experiences have allowed me to work with learners and audiences of different ages, levels, and educational backgrounds. They have also shaped the way I teach Chinese today. I pay close attention to how each student understands and uses language, where they may need more support, and what genuinely interests them. I then adapt the materials, pace, and activities to help them expand their vocabulary, understand words and expressions in context, and communicate increasingly complex ideas in a natural and confident way.
