About Tyrus
Music has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I grew up playing drums in church and joined the beginning band in grade school.
From there I went on to graduate with a B.A. in music from Goshen College. Along the way, I won a spot in the college's concerto competition. I also competed in Winter Guard International (2017 Legacy Performing Arts) and Drum Corps International (2018 Madison Scouts). I have performed in musical theatre pits for many years as well as local professional orchestras. I have played drums in numerous bands covering many genres: Rock, Neo-Soul, R&B, Jazz, etc.
I started teaching private lessons right out of high school in 2015 and taught a variety of students of different grades, styles, and progress levels. I have taught all ages on the drum set, from 4-year-olds to 45-year-olds. It's never too late to learn!
Thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit about myself

English
As a trained classical percussionist as well as a self-taught drum set player from the age of 10, my approach to teaching utilizes a variety of methods:
- Developing traditional music reading and writing skills
- Classical Ear training
- Non-traditional Suzuki learning methods
- Learning through music exploration
I have experience in and can teach in the following settings for drums/percussion:
-Classical orchestral/band (all percussion instruments)
-Jazz & Funk
-Rock and Metal
-Marching/Drum Corps
-Brazilian Drumming
-Latin percussion techniques
I have experience teaching all levels and all ages but have primarily taught in the grade school through high school age range.
Lessons will involve a balance of technique and musicality training utilizing an 80/20 method.
For myself, the 80/20 method means the most results come from a small amount of critical teaching. This comprises of a couple things:
1. Knowledge of Time
2. Knowledge of Rhythm
3. Musicality
Focusing on these 3 things in all areas of percussion will yield faster and more efficient results in the long run.
