About Ariel
I've been teaching in some capacity for over ten years. The year prior to college I worked full time as an assistant teacher in an elementary classroom through AmeriCorps. During college, I spent my summers teaching storytelling to adults, robotics to kids, and narrative fiction to 5th graders. After college, I spent two years in Teach For America, teaching 3rd grade and getting my master's degree at the same time. I now have my professional license in K-6 education and a Master's in teaching with a focus on culturally and linguistically diverse education. I've completed my 5th year full-time in the classroom and am taking this year off to develop my writing. I can't imagine not teaching for a whole year, so I'll be tutoring former students and have room for more students in my schedule. Maybe that will be you!

My teaching style focuses on finding the joy in learning. I believe that everyone learns better when they are deeply and meaningfully engaged. In the past five years I've taught 3rd-5th grade, and I've seen time and again that invested students are successful students. A typical writing lesson plan might involve reading a mentor text and then trying to use a writing strategy ourselves. For example, a fourth grade student who loves Percy Jackson might learn character traits best by thinking about the characters they love and making a Pokémon-style card for each of them. I teach reading and writing in all sorts of areas-- reach out if you think I might be a good fit, and I will honestly let you know if I can meet your needs. I love working with students of all ages!

Ariel is such a fun and engaging teacher! She taught my son for the past few years, and he was devastated that he won't be able to be in her classroom next year. I highly recommend working with Ariel, she's just lovely and brilliant.
