About Arseny
Empathetic and passionate design educator holding a Master of Architecture from Cornell University, with 10 years of experience in the discipline of architecture. I have taught grad and undergrad design studios at Cornell, including introductory architecture to non-majors. Committed to teaching, I have served on the teaching advisory board at Minneapolis College, and as an admissions reader for the Cornell M.Arch program. I have also participated as an invited critic at The Parsons School of Design and Boston College. My professional design experience includes collaborations with internationally renowned architects, researchers, universities, and public institutions, including David Chipperfield, Deborah Berke, Peter Eisenman, Dream the Combine, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and City of New York. My writing, drawings, and photography have been published in Log and Architectural Design.

I offer one-on-one tutoring which may include the following based on student needs: career counseling, studio-style critique, portfolio review, lesson plans for subjects such as Revit, 3D modeling, or representational theory and drawing, or a design prompt akin to the Harvard GSD Design Discovery program or the Cornell Architecture Summer Program (which I have taught). I believe in striking a balance between active learning and small informal lectures.
Every student deserves a custom learning plan that we create together on day one, based on their level and the specialization of the topic. Are you considering studying architecture? Do you need specific preparation before entering graduate school? Some students require one session with me, while others may benefit from repeated meetings akin to an academic semester. The student has full agency regarding the scope of our collaboration. I welcome students who do not have prior architecture experience. I am also happy to meet with parents and offer consultation.
General Teaching Philosophy:
I have expertise in spatial and image theory, fine art, installation art, experimental structures and fabrication, multimedia, interactive design, participatory design methods, and traditional architecture practice. My strengths as a teacher are my ability to listen to students with empathy and to drive projects conceptually by asking critical questions and providing access to a broad range of references and resources.
My pedagogical approach emphasizes embodied investigation, observation, and the 1:1 scale as a testing ground. I believe it is
important to listen to students and excavate the spatial knowledge they already have, to develop their working processes, and to prepare them for challenges as they enter the difficult field of architecture. I believe my job as a teacher is to share my passion for architecture and cultivate a dynamic energy in the studio.
We often fail to support neurodiversity in education across the board, including architecture. I have told my students: "I am here to help you develop your own tools and techniques." Many students come into design thinking they need to be strong at drawing and math and we should actively dispel these myths and nourish their unique strengths. The most interesting aspect to teaching is discovering how many approaches there are to solving the same design problems. Therefore, I find it effective to introduce students to a variety of techniques such as drawing, collage, physical modeling, and photography. And then layering, mixing, and hybridizing them to increase the flexibility of the design process. These techniques activate different modes of perception and make the pedagogy accessible to diverse learners.
