About Esme
I've just finished the second year of my degree so my own admissions cycle is fresh in my mind and preparing for maths exams is something I still do all the time! I've amassed a lot of resources and practice questions for the MAT and interviews and I know what tutors are looking for in prospective applicants. For the past 4 years, I've done informal maths tutoring digitally and in person, ranging from GCSE to University admissions. I've also run a lot of practice interviews for Oxford applicants. Whatever the level, I focus on assessing and building a student's understanding of the content rather than making them memorise it.

I focus primarily on MAT preparation since this is the most important part of an application for Oxford/Imperial maths. In a session, rather than just going through past paper solutions with students, I'll offer up similar follow-up questions so that we can fully fool-proof their understanding of the topic the question is covering. Sessions are at least an hour, typically an hour and a half (but I'm flexible and take into account that students already have a stressful A level workload). I offer an initial 45min long trial session for free so you can see if my teaching will help you. We'll make a plan that covers everything on the MAT syllabus and all of the most common question formats that are likely to come up. I also like to teach some concepts that are not covered at A level but often motivate questions on the MAT (like number theory, combinatorics, graph drawing skills and more). Then as we get closer to the exam date, I put more emphasis on timed practice and exam technique. For personal statements, I can offer guidance on structuring and writing as well as ideas for what "super-curriculars" you can complete (in any given timeframe) to look impressive and show passion for the subject but also improve your problem solving. Then, usually only after a student has sat the MAT, we will start interview preparation. I'll run plenty of real-time practice interviews and offer feedback. My aim is to coach the student in explaining their thought process in a way that is clear to the tutors and to give them practice solving problems under pressure.
