About Katie
I’m Katie, and I’m currently a graduate-entry medic at Cambridge University. However, in a previous life, I was a historian, specialising in gender history and pre-colonial African history. I wrote my thesis on the temporal experience of enslaved Africans during the era of abolition.
In many ways I would have loved to carry on History, but I knew I wanted to become a doctor. However, I believe that History is a very valuable subject, and teaches you to push boundaries and question everything, even facts which seem obviously true.
I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie in my spare time, enjoying any sport outdoors, but especially climbing.

History is often thought of as a subject heavy with dates, facts and statistics. Ultimately though, History is all about understanding how we justify interpreting an idea, and recognising that there is always more than one side to a story. Therefore although my lessons involve ways of remembering facts, I think History is best taught by discussing and challenging ideas, and therefore remembering the facts within the context of a debate. I like to therefore focus my lessons around discussion and source interpretation, and student-led debate.
I have a variety of tutoring experience, including currently doing UCAT and medical interview teaching. During my undergraduate degree I volunteered weekly to go into local primary schools and read with students who had low reading ages, helping to build their confidence and identify particular weaknesses. I built on this in the pandemic by moving to tutoring to exam year groups who had limited access to online learning and helping produce resources, including a GCSE English textbook. During my gap year, I helped organise a work experience weeks for students applying to medicine through the Heritage Centre for the Royal College of Anaesthesia, challenging students to engage with the historical narratives and implications of medical practice.
I normally teach for 50 minutes, and I am able to teach History from GCSE to university level, depending on topics. I am also happy to help with university applications and HAT tests.
