About Theo

– 3rd-year undergraduate student in Modern Languages (French and German) at the University of Oxford
– Elected a Scholar in both French and German in December 2020 (scholarships are awarded to students whose work is consistently of first-class standard)
– Achieved 96% in Oxford entrance exam (MLAT); Cambridge Pre U German D1 (top grade), GCSE German A*; native speaker of French, C2 certified in German (93% aggregate score in Goethe GDS)
– Oxford interview scores: 10/10 and 9.5/10
– Four years' experience providing academic mentoring in French, German, Latin and English Literature. 2 years' experience providing Oxford interview practice pro bono and privately.
– Serial language learner: I speak 3 languages natively or to a native level, 1 conversationally and I am learning another from scratch.

About the lesson

I offer the following services to Oxford applicants for Modern Languages, its Joint Schools and English:

-Intensive MLAT preparation (French/German only): I will ask you to do a set of MLAT or MLAT-style exercises in advance of the lesson under timed conditions. I will mark your paper and we will go through your mistakes in detail. I will then give you resources and exercises targeted at the areas of grammar or translation that need shoring up. (1 hour)

-Mock subject interview (French/German/English only): We will simulate an unseen literature-based Oxford interview (the norm for Modern Languages and English). I will give you a passage of literature (a poem, a scene from a play, an extract of a novel...) in advance of the interview and you will have a set time to read it and annotate it. I will ask you a series of questions about the text and your reaction to it, and perhaps some broader questions too. (1 hour: 40 minutes interviewing, 20 minutes feedback and advice)

-Mock generic interview (non-French/German Modern Languages only): Same as mock subject interview above, except that the text will be in English (and not your target language — sadly I only speak French and German). Some colleges have been known to give Modern Languages applicants texts in English at interview so you may find this useful. (1 hour: 40 minutes interviewing, 20 minutes feedback and advice)

-Mock Personal Statement interview (French, German, English): You will send me your Personal Statement and submitted written work (or the work you intend to submit) in advance of the interview. We will then discuss both of these and related topics thoroughly. Expect your target language skills to be tested if you are a modern linguist. (1 hour: 40 minutes interviewing, 20 minutes feedback and advice)

-Target language speaking practice (French/German only): Worried about the target language component of your interview? Using your Personal Statement as an initial basis, we will practice discussion in the target language, focusing on fluency and confidence. (1 hour: 40-50 mins discussion, 10-20 mins feedback and advice)
