About Michael

I am Michael Stark, an American educator from San Diego, California, now based in Taiwan. Since 1999, I have helped children, teenagers, and adults develop their English and academic skills, including reading fluency and comprehension.

I hold a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside, and a 150-hour TESOL certificate from Arizona State University. My studies have included learning and memory and children’s literacy development. My professional background also includes ten years as a juvenile justice court counselor and five years as a counselor and teacher at Ivy American School in Kaohsiung.

In my teaching, I have worked with students who can read aloud accurately yet find it difficult to explain what they have read. I pay close attention to each learner’s strengths and difficulties, offering patient guidance, constructive feedback, and clear expectations.

Through Michael’s Original Student Tutoring (MOST), I help learners build confidence in reading, understanding, and expressing their ideas. Families can expect thoughtful preparation and clear communication about progress.

About the lesson

Reading words correctly is an important beginning. Understanding, explaining, and thinking about what we read are equally important. My online lessons develop these skills through individual instruction adapted to each learner’s needs.

For developing readers, we work on phonics, decoding, vocabulary, and fluency. For students who read accurately but struggle with comprehension, we focus on sequencing events, identifying main ideas and supporting details, making inferences, and explaining why things happen.

A typical lesson includes a brief review, guided reading, vocabulary in context, and discussion. Students retell passages in their own words, answer “how” and “why” questions, and support their answers with evidence from the text. Short writing activities and personalized assignments reinforce learning between lessons.

These lessons are suitable for children, teenagers, and adults, including native English speakers and English learners with enough English to participate in guided reading and discussion. Texts are selected to match the student’s current abilities, interests, and goals.

Drawing on my teaching experience since 1999 and background in psychology, I provide patient guidance that helps students become more confident, thoughtful, and independent readers.
