About Alan

Hi! I’m Alan, a college student at NYU currently studying Business and Finance. I grew up in California and am bilingual in English and Chinese, and I’ve spent a significant amount of time studying in both the U.S. and Shanghai.

Chinese has been a big part of my life beyond just speaking it. I’ve studied Chinese at the post-advanced level, including Classical Chinese and Chinese newspaper reading, and I’ve spent years working on Chinese-English translation. I’ve also had experience teaching and explaining Chinese texts to others.

Outside of academics, I’m interested in business, entrepreneurship, technology, and meeting people from different backgrounds. As a tutor, I’m pretty relaxed and patient, and I want students to feel comfortable making mistakes and actually talking rather than worrying about being perfect.

I know learning Chinese can feel intimidating, especially when it comes to tones and speaking, so I try to make the experience feel more like learning with someone who understands where you’re coming from rather than sitting through another formal class.

About the lesson

I tailor my Chinese lessons to each student’s level, goals, and learning style. For beginners, I focus on pronunciation, tones, essential vocabulary, and building confidence in everyday conversations. For more advanced students, lessons can include reading, writing, grammar, Chinese culture, and more natural spoken Chinese.

I’m bilingual in English and Chinese and currently study at NYU. I have completed post-advanced Chinese coursework, including Chinese newspaper reading and Classical Chinese, and I have experience translating Chinese and English as well as teaching and explaining Chinese texts.

A typical lesson combines conversation practice with structured learning and real-world examples rather than simply memorizing vocabulary lists. I can also help students with schoolwork, Chinese exams, reading comprehension, or simply becoming more comfortable speaking Mandarin.

Whether you’re starting from zero or already have experience with Chinese, I’ll adjust the lessons to what you actually want to improve.
