About Sarah

I have a Bachelor of Science (concentration in applied math) and a Master of Science (specialized in mathematical biology and differential equations, i.e., I use math equations to study biological, sociological, or ecological systems). The thing that brings joy to my life is working with students and I have since used these degrees to teach at Okanagan College (college professor) and UBCO (teaching assistant). My previous students know that I will do anything to make examples about animals and share cute dog, cat, or owl pictures while also making sure that I create a safe space for them to learn math. I love answering any and all math questions (even if you feel you've asked too many). I look forward to working with you!

About the lesson

I take a learner-centered approach to tutoring. This means I meet you where you're at and together we build up your math knowledge until you can succeed. I have extensive experience working with students with math anxiety or those who feel they aren't a "math person". My greatest joy in teaching occurs when I can support a student from being scared of math to disliking math a little less to understanding math (or in the best cases, starting to maybe even like it). Of course, I also enjoy working with students who appreciate math and want to increase their understanding or nerd out over cool math. Tutoring sessions with me start with lots of questions so that I can figure out your base math knowledge and where your struggles are occurring. I strongly believe that anyone can do math, it just takes a different amount of practice for each person to reach their goals. Which leads to the majority of the time in a session - we do as many examples as you need to feel comfortable solving math problems on your own. The part that makes tutoring with me special is my background in applied math. If you have ever wanted to know why you have to learn certain topics of math or why it even matters, that is my specialty! I would be so happy to explain why each part of math is important and how it can be used in the real world!
