About Lorien

Hi there, I’m Lorien Drew. I was born in China and spent most of our time growing up traveling across continents. I now live in the USA. Cultural differences sparked my interest when I was very young. And finally became my motivation to start teaching language three years ago. I learned English as a toddler and started French two years ago. So yeah, I perfectly know what it is like to learn a language so different from your mother tongue. That is why I decided to teach in a way I was not taught before. I’d like to help you really use your new language power, love it, feel like you’re native. And you’ll become native. More about me? You can often find me on climbing walls or somewhere in the wilderness seventy-ish miles from the nearest human being backpacking. I’m also passionate about karate and equestrian, both of which I started at six. I’m also a great fan of Western classical music and classical guitar! Currently, I’m finishing my dual degree in Physics and Philosophy.

About the lesson

My lessons value practices of using new concepts and vocabulary in verbal and written forms after introducing them. This is to encourage a deep absorption of new materials and trial-and-error, instead of mindless learning. As a native Mandarin speaker, I foster a welcoming atmosphere for students to start using what they learn in a way natives use them. I also provide access to slang and daily communication skills to advanced learners. For starters, I begin with explaining the Chinese language system and showcasing similarities with learners’ native language to give a general picture of what to expect. I then start introducing vocabulary. You may expect speaking Chinese from the first class, as I introduce new concepts along the way. I shift to teaching partially in Mandarin as students advance and value continuous inputs via listening and reading, which is essential for getting a sense of this complicated language.
