About Alina

I am a native speaker of Spanish and am studying Linguistics, Spanish Linguistics, and English at UNC Chapel Hill (Class of 2019). I have found a love and passion for Spanish in the last two years since beginning my Spanish Linguistics major at UNC and would love to be able to help someone studying the language! I have maintained a 3.53 GPA within my Spanish Linguistics major (including graduate-level classes) and a cumulative GPA of 3.45 (both GPAs are on a 4-point scale). Please note that Spanish Linguistics is slightly different from a regular Spanish major in the sense that there is more of a focus on how the language is spoken rather than reading/writing. However, I have taken composition and conversation classes to make up for it. This way, not only am I able to help with reading and writing, but I can also help with improving accents and speaking in a more natural way.

About the lesson

In the past, my tutoring sessions were always set up in advance and done in person. We simply worked with whatever subject/unit the student was on; the sessions worked more like review than me teaching them any new concepts, unless there was something they had not learned yet that could help them (in this case, I would explain said concept and its relation to the topic at hand in an effort to help the student better understand whatever they were having a hard time with). Sometimes we reviewed material; other times I just checked over homework or helped the student prepare for an exam; I have also had conversation sessions where the student simply practiced their Spanish with me. Oftentimes it depended on what the student felt they needed, although I do understand that others may need a more structured/consistent approach.

A typical session started with the student's homework or assignment already completed or at least attempted; I asked them to do so before the session to save time. I would then ask them explain to me what they were learning in class, go over the appropriate lesson in the textbook with them and/or their notes if applicable, clear up any questions, and then ask them to go back over their homework if there was anything they could not answer or think they got wrong. Afterwards, I'd go over the assignment with them, make corrections, and make sure the student understood the reasoning behind the answers. If possible, I would also go over any quizzes or tests and help study vocabulary, grammar, pronunciations, etc.

I would like you to know that I am very flexible! I understand that everyone learns differently and may have different strengths and weaknesses, so I am completely willing to approach tutoring sessions in whatever way works best for the student.

Details

Cancellation Policy: Must cancel within 48 hours of scheduled day and time. Failure to cancel within 48 hours will result in $10 fee. If I am notified of a cancellation AFTER the scheduled time or there is a "no-show", full payment is expected.
Travel Cost Policy: any meeting location 10 miles or more will result in a $5 travel fee.
